INTERVIEW WITH MILTOS OF IN UTERO CANNIBAALISM

BY HELIAS

In Utero Cannibalsim

A founding member of Greek brutal metallers, In Utero Cannibalism, Miltos has providing guidance for many fundamental bands in the scene and now hangs his hat with IUC, a band with a mortal guttural obsessionand he gave us a piece of their collective and individual minds.

Metal-Rules.com: Hello miltos! First of all, how are you doing? And where are you checking in from today?

Miltos: Hi there,it’s been a busy period since the release of our ‘Playing With Dummy’ EP. At this moment we are rehearsing for the upcoming lives. The first one will take place in Athens and we are also discussing the possibility of touring in selected locations in Greece and Europe.

Metal-Rules.com: Although IN UTERO CANNIBALISM is not such a new band; please introduce yourself and the band to the metal world.

Miltos: The band was founded in 2004 by our current drummer,Alex. Despite the fact that we were on hold for a certain amount of time,we have managed to release 3 full-length albums (Psychotic Killing Lust , Frenzied , Sick) and 2 EPs (Failure Of Christ , Playing With Dummy). The lineup consists of Alex (drums),Bill (vocals),Kostas (rhythm guitars),Stefanos (bass) and myself (lead guitars). There have not been any line up changes in the band since our first release, with the sole exception of our newest member,Stefanos.

Metal-Rules.com: How did you come up with the band name? You like gore themes or you are just fans of bands like Cannibal Corpse?

Miltos: We are certainly fond of bands like Cannibal Corpse, but this had nothing to do with choosing this name. Everybody is well aware that the band names and song titles in the death metal genre have a symbolic meaning and this is how the audience should perceive it. As far as gore themes are concerned, they are of major importance ,especially lyrically, but we still insist on using them in a symbolic manner.

MetalRules.com: As I have heard you new EP ‘Playing with Dummy’, you are a primal extreme metal band, influenced by the early days of Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Pestilence, Vader, maybe Avulsed, isn’t it? Please tell us the influences on the debut album.

Miltos: It would be almost unnatural to not be influenced by those bands,as they are widely regarded the ‘godfathers’ of the death metal scene.Furthermore,I reckon that we should also give credit to groups such as Malevolent Creation, Deicide and Morbid Angel. For the record, I feel honoured that by listening through our discography you could feel the aura of such historical bands, but I must say that you missed out mentioning our dominant influence (at least from my point of view), DEATH! To be precise, the structure of certain songs throughout our discography is based on the early works of Chuck, but I must say that we are not trying to become another clone-band, as I believe that the scene is already flooded with copycats.

Metal-Rules.com: Can you tell me a little more about the lyrics, did anything particular inspire you?

Miltos: Beyond the lyrical influence of the aforementioned bands (serial killers, gore movies etc.), each of us is inspired by his surroundings and personal emotions and reactions in every fucked up situation. As musicians we are obliged to avoid describing situations from our perspective and try to have an impact in a much wider social context.

Metal-Rules.com: Can you tell us some words about the production of the album, and who is involved and responsible for the sound and mixing?

Miltos: The recordings took place in 9800 Studio in Aigaleo, Athens. The mixing and mastering were a far more challenging task, as we weren’t satisfied with the results of our first attempts in Greece. Fortunately, our first attempt with a foreign studio turned out to be ideal, as Murder Sound Studio in Bulgaria was exactly what we had in mind.

Metal-Rules.com: How did you get into playing music?

Miltos: I started developing a musical interest at the age of 3 and eventually I a ttended a traditional music school (Aristeides Mosxos), where I learnt to play santouri. After studying Byzantine and European music in the Conservatory of Athens,I began rehearsing with a wide variety of bands, all with a different musical direction.Even today I strive to incorporate elements from all my musical experience in my compositions and keep thinking outside the box.

Metal-Rules.com: What’s your opinion on other kinds of music?

Miltos: I honestly believe that every kind of music has something to offer, but it’s always up to the listener to decide what he prefers most. However, nowadays the music industry is responsible for shaping the taste of millions of people, something that is easily achieved due to the total lack of musical education and critical thinking of the mass. I have a great amount of respect for musicians who dedicated their lives to their art, despite the obstacles they may have faced. I vomit at the sight of people listening to crappy musical abominations that only preach about making money and fucking sluts as a life perspective.

Metal-Rules.com:  Is there any Greek metal bands that you really like or want to share the stage?

Miltos: The greek death metal scene has shown a certain amount of progress during the last years and there many bands who we respect and we would gladly share the stage with, but I’d prefer not to mention specific ones.

Metal-Rules.com: What’s the plans for you in the near future? Can you imagine yourself with the band after 30 years of action out there?

Miltos: We have already began writing some new material, which will be included in our next full length, entitled ‘Dehumanize’. I reckon that this is a very creative period for all the members of the band, so you ll be hearing from us soon.Furthermore, I believe that one of the main characteristics of a ‘healthy’ band is to know when it has closed its circle,so if we feel that we have something to offer even after thirty years, we ’ll be in the frontline!

Metal-Rules.com: How important is it to you that people pay attention to your lyrics apart from listening to your music?

Miltos: You need to comprehend something that I think you already know. People listen to songs and not music, I’m sure that you have noticed that the majority of people tend to judge whether or not they like a song after they have heard the voice of the singer. It’s something very logical because the musical IQ of those people is too damn low. Lyrics are the most understandable part of a musical piece (most of the times), when people come across a style of music that they cannot comprehend because it’s not ear friendly, they try to focus on the vocal part. Death metal is characterized by symbolism and the lyrical content has a very specific goal, to create an emotional state to the listener (anger, hate, lust etc.). The drums simulate the human heartbeat (presto),the singer takes on the role of the beast, ignoring whether or not his utterance is comprehensible or not, because he is mostly interested in the emotional impact that his voice carries.

Metal-Rules.com: The band was on hiatus for awhile, I think, what was the cause of the split and the decision to reform the band once again?

Miltos: There was never an official split,we were just on hold. Each one of us needed to gain his own experience and clear his head. As you can see, it was just a deep breath before the storm!

Metal-Rules.com: And now I would like to discuss about some deplorable events. We are in the end of 2013 and three big metal personas have passed away… Ronnie James Dio, Peter Steele and Paul Grey (SLIPKNOT) and finaly Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER). Are the last 4 years the most depressing years of heavy metal?

Miltos: There’s no doubt that the passing of these metal icons has been unfortunate. The only thing I want to comment is that the only way to pay a proper tribute is by keeping their music alive.

Metal-Rules.com: What do you think of today’s music industry in general?

Miltos:As I stated before, the music industry is treating music like a product, which is meant for easy consumption. And which product would be better than the one that has a short expiration date?

Metal-Rules.com: Is technology part of your life or are you still a “romantic”?

Miltos: I am myself a user of technology, as most people nowadays are , but the main difference is that tend not to overuse it and most of all i do not feel addicted to it. That also applies to how we compose our music, as we crave to keep the ‘human touch’ and not have this feeling replaced by soulless effects and flawless computerized ‘perfection’.

Metal-Rules.com: I have beholden that heavy metal changes through the decades. Heavy and Thrash metal dominated over in 80’s, Death, Black and Power metal in 90’s and Metalcore and Nu Metal in the 00’s in general. 2010 was the beginning sign of the new decade. What do you see for the future?

Miltos: I cannot say for sure what the future holds, but I’m positive that In Utero Cannibalism will be a part of it. In general, I only hope that we will witness an evolution in music and stop relying so heavily in recycling past ideas.

Metal-Rules.com: If you could pick only one musician to work with, who would that be and why?

Miltos: There are many musicians that I would be glad to cooperate with, but lately there has been a certain someone who I admire, Efrén López. He has managed to mix different styles of music, has a tremendous improvisational capability and makes use of a wide variety of instruments from all over the world without diminishing their value.

Metal-Rules.com:  Could you respond to the following terms in just one word or sentence:

Death metal: A part of myself

Greece: Still under siege.

Politics: Some…are…ass (Got it???)

Prison Break (TV series): WHO FUCKING CARES???

Black Sabbath: My initiation to Metal

Metal-Rules.com: Thank you for this interview. I wish to you and the rest guys of ‘IN UTERO CANNIBALISM’ all the best!!!

Miltos: Thank you Helias, I wish all the best to you.
