Sensation: The Story Of Tommy (Blu-Ray)
2014, Eagle Rock Ent.
My introduction to TOMMY was through an older sibling’s LP when I was just a young lad. It wasn’t until years later that I discovered that what I knew as TOMMY was the film soundtrack and not the original album. Upon finding this out I immediately had to hear the original album. This documentary on the TOMMY album is both informative and interesting. SENSATION shows us how the iconic TOMMY album came to be and the impact that it had.
This disc begins like most in that it begins with a little bit of history for those unfamiliar with the band and the album. There is some great interview footage with Daltrey and Townsend taken exclusively for this film. In these interviews both surviving members recollect the times and circumstances leading up to the album and how they needed that ‘Hit’ record. The times were tough and they were spending more than they earned. It was on TOMMY that Townsend really became a songwriter capable of more than the simple Rock song. Yes, those early singles are fantastic and still are to this day but the complexity on this album which many consider to be the first ‘Concept’ album is extraordinary, especially for the time. Hearing the stories of the behind the scenes stuff makes for an interesting viewing experience versus hearing the same old stories over and over again. It adds a freshness to it and keeps you interested.
Hearing how this iconic album was made and came to be is a must see for all fans of this album. I am positive even the biggest fans of The Who will learn something new. SENSATION is how a documentary on an album should be done. The only thing missing is more on the recording aspects.
