@ Brixton Academy

The air smells like hair spray and there are more wigs and thighs wrapped in tight lycra than you will ever find in Cher’s wardrobe. In the air flows blow up penises and dolls. Is this a bad dream? No, this is normality in the world of California rockers, Steel Panther.
Supporters, The Cringe (4/6), seem a bit misplaced at first glance and first played note and one might think this is a case of “friends of friends invites guys on tour as a favour”.
The band does not exactly suit the denim, lycra and bandana wearing crowd.
The problem is not that the band sounds terrible or bad in any way. It actually almost sounds a bit too perfect and like rock n roll that can get airplay on TV. It doesn´t even get spicy and hot when the singer tries to talk dirty to the crowd by calling them “sexy”.
But here is the thing: The band can fill out the academy with their sound. The venue suits them and what The Cringe does is exactly what they are hired to do: They support the main act. They know how to give the right support and anticipate the crowd for the main act.
The crowd is getting warmed up by the Black Sabbath cover bits that are thrown in and they finish off in style – and a little too easy – with a cover of Thin Lizzy and a crowd-surfing lead-singer.
To claim that your favourite band is hair metal-mockers, Steel Panther (4/6), is just foul.
This is pure entertainment in the likes of Spinal Tap and the panthers are here with a sole purpose: To entertain. But that does not mean that the band doesn’t have true fans.
People are dressed for the part and ready to be hit with jokes centered around the chest and below waist.
Whatever Steel Panther do, they do it right because they just seem to grow. They have gone from a house-band on the Sunset Strip´s House of Blues to a sold out Brixton Academy on a school night and a full-on UK tour to follow.
Steel Panther announces straight away from the stage that they know from a fact that “the pussy is fucking tight in the UK”. Same goes for the show; it is fucking tight.
There is no messing about and dull silence does not exist.
They kill the show a bit by showing so many music videos in the background and it is a cheap and easy way out. It steals the focus from the actual, living, breathing band on stage who shows off details that needs the attention. Surely Youtube can provide the videos for the audience after the show.
This night is not for the prudes. All the jokes and the whole show is below the belt. Literally.
Even a joke about the leadsinger from Lost Prophets gets thrown in there.
One might think that these guys takes a living of looking and acting like jerks, but whatever they do it works cause never has so many chicks flashed their tits in front of a sold out academy.
Maybe that is just cause no other bands demand their fans to go on stage and flash!? Entertaining, it sure is.
