First thing to mention about this show is that it took place on Ragnarok. What better way to spend the end of the world (according to the Vikings) than with sophisticated Nordic metal? Both Swedish band Dark Tranquillity and Finnish band Omnium Gatherum blend the melancholic with the uplifting, creating thought-provoking, mood-inducing metal that complement each other quite well. It was definitely a fitting duo for a line-up. I could both see and feel the effect the bands had on the audience members – it was beautiful.

I got a very strong sense of Finnishness from Omnium Gatherum’s music. I can’t quite explain why, but it just seemed very essentially Finnish and it made for quite a powerful show. They masterfully included clean vocal harmonies with deep growls, and elegant choruses evolved out of satisfyingly heavy verses. Lead vocalist Jukka Pelkonen was one of the most chill-seeming frontmen I’ve seen. He had a relaxed, positive vibe, and was wearing what appeared to be yoga pants or something – a very down-to-earth guy. And his live vocals and growls were spot-on. He hopped off-stage several times to mingle with and sing to the audience from the barricade, hugging as many audience members as he could and showing enormous appreciation for their support.

Dark Tranquillity’s stage set-up included a huge video screen in the background that synced graphics, chorus-lyrics, and even full music videos with their live performance. Vocalist Mikael Stanne had an unstoppable amount of charisma and energy, and a winning smile that seemingly never left his face. He made it clear that he was thrilled to be performing for us, and who doesn’t like seeing someone who truly loves what they do? The entire band gave off a solid, unified feel. Dark Tranquillity played through a substantial set-list that included songs ranging from old to new, giving every fan in the venue a chance to sing and scream along. Whether you knew every song they played or not, however, the music and Stanne’s vocals were gripping – without a single dull moment for anyone. Stanne showed his gratefulness and love for the crowd throughout the entire show, and like Pelkonen, made his way to the barrier many times to interact with everyone there. He even picked up a girl and sang to her, and helped a crowd surfer over the barricade! What a cool guy.

Ragnarok could’ve been ending the world outside, but the crowd in the House of Blues would’ve paid no attention, thanks to this transfixing performance.
