Interview with Carsten Hille of Javelin
Metal-Rules.com: Hello, Carsten, how are you?
Carsten Hille: Very good ! Thank you! Although we’re a bit excited, because the album will be released in a few days! And there are already great reviews online, what makes us very happy so far.
Metal-Rules.com: Which are the main influences on the ‘Javelin’ sound?
Carsten Hille: Well, I think it’s the late 80’s and early 90’s sound. As I became a Javelin member in 1991 we loved to play stuff of Megadeth, Metallica ,Annihilator or Overkill.
But we also loved the stuff from Judas Priest, Helloween, Vicious Rumors! The mix of Power metal riffing and melody, that’s our influences!
Metal-Rules.com: You have only one word to describe the entire ‘Javelin’ career? Which word would that be? And why?
Carsten Hille: Adamant ! Over all these years, no “band-time out”, line-up change or setback gave Javelin the “deathblow”, you know? The main core of Javelin always moved on, no matter how long or what it may take!
Metal-Rules.com: What does the ‘Javelin’ name mean for you?
Carsten Hille: Durability, friendship and fun over so many years! And as the javelin itself, soaring metal that hits every target!
Metal-Rules.com: How did you get into playing music?
Carsten Hille: I started as a13 years old metal guitar player. At this time I listened to “Kreator”, “Sodom” and “ Running Wild”. I played in a few Rock/Metal bands until I joined Javelin.
Metal-Rules.com: What do you do when you are not playing with the band?
Carsten Hille: I’m working on new lyrics, keep our social networks updated, look around for live- gigs/contacts or similar.
Metal-Rules.com: What’s your opinion on other kinds of music?
Carsten Hille: Besides metal, I love classical music, but some Top 40 stuff is interesting although! Some songs from “Adele” for example (I am a James Bond maniac) or “Anastacia”, real great voices!!
Metal-Rules.com: Which are the plans of ‘Javelin’ for the future?
Carsten Hille: We hope to play live as much as possible in 2014!!! Besides that, we’re working on new material, to come up with a new album in 2015.
Metal-Rules.com: You are about to come to Greece? Do you know any Greek metal bands that you really like or want to share the stage?
Carsten Hille: We hope to make it to Greece! I know the bands “Firewind” and “Mystic Prophecy”( with R.D.Liapakis on vocals)! I played a gig in Germany as support for Mystic Prophecy with my former band “Fallen Angels” in the “Matrix-Bochum” in 2005. We would love to get on tour with these guys again sometime!!!
Metal-Rules.com: Well, you are about to release your second full-length work called ‘Fragments of the Inner Shadows’. Tell us some things about this release. I can see that this album is different to the other ones, but I don’t know why. Could you please give us some of those differences?
Carsten Hille: Well, it’s our first official album with a label. It’s amazing that “Puresteel-Records” is working with us, worldwide! That’s what we ever dreamt of. Finally we made a wish come true, to deliver a full concept album that tells a story! I don’t wanted to write about dragons , dungeons or political stuff. It developed an thrilling, mysterious story. An exciting “novel to hear”! The main differences to the other two outputs may be the years! 1997. Seasons of grey, was playful and without a main direction. We had these few songs and recorded them. 2009, Dark broken land, compact and powerful sound, elaborated songwriting, another step in the right direction! 2013, ‘Fragments of the inner shadow’ : Progression!!On this album, we have brought together the best of the last two EP’s. Further we worked with real professionals for Promo-Pics and Cover-artwork, this time! Tom Row Jäschke took amazing pictures and Christophe Dessaigne gave us a wonderful cover-art!! They were truly the best for us.
Metal-Rules.com: And now I would like to discuss about some deplorable events. We are in the middle of 2013 and three big metal personas have passed away… Ronnie James Dio, Peter Steele and Paul Grey (SLIPKNOT) and finaly Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER) . Are the last 4 years the most depressing years of heavy metal?
Carsten Hille: Yes, it was really frightening… In such a short period of time, these great icons passed away. They leave a big gap! But it happened in a very short time, over a longer period many great artists of the metal left. Cliff Burton, Bon Scott or Randy Rhoads….
Metal-Rules.com: Five months have already passed after Jeff Hanneman (SLAYER) passing away. What would you like to say about that?
Carsten Hille: That was really tragic. The most of us grew up with his music! Slayer will never be the same without Jeff, but this band is strong! They will have to learn to make music without their long-time friend… Nobody can simply replace such this man. But there will be a new musician and maybe friend… He would have wanted them to go on! R.I.P Jeff.
Metal-Rules.com: What do you think of today’s music industry in general?
Carsten Hille: It became incredibly difficult to get into it as a musician/band. So many new releases per month…the sales changed completely. Digital album, downloads etc. Sometimes, it’s confusing! So few get real rich, and so many have to fight for every cent/song.
Metal-Rules.com: Is technology part of your life or are you still a “romantic”?
Carsten Hille: It’s absolutely part of my life. I need my smartphone, my PC, the big Flat screen TV!!! But, I also love to turn the smartphone off and listen to old vinyl or watching oldschool movies ( Hitchcock in b/w or similar). I think I found a good way in the middle. Being modern romantic.
Metal-Rules.com: I have beholden that heavy metal changes through the decades. Heavy and Thrash metal dominated over in 80’s, Death, Black and Power metal in 90’s and Metalcore and Nu Metal in the 00’s in general. 2010 was the beginning sign of the new decade. What do you see for the future?
Carsten Hille: I think that the classic heavy / power metal will gradually reassert itself. Look at Steel Panther, Attic or similar band! The 80’s/90’s will be BACK!
Metal-Rules.com: What’s your opinion on downloading?
Carsten Hille: I prefer to go to a record shop! If I want to buy an album, I prefer to hold it in my own two hands. But if the great mass of people chooses to download, OK! We are right here, in the next web-shop.
Metal-Rules.com: If you could pick only one musician to work with, who would that be and why?
Carsten Hille: The vocalist Russel Allen of Symphony X!!! His vocal range, power and sense for great melodies are outstanding!
Metal-Rules.com: Thank you for this interview. I wish to ‘Javelin’ all the best!!!
Carsten Hille: I thank you on behalf of my band for your interest!!! I hope, we meet again at a Javelin gig in greece!
Cheers,Welcome to the show…Javelheads, GO !!!
