Interview with Blaze Bayley

Interview by Ilias (Guest writer from Greece)

Blaze2.jpegHello Blaze how are you and where are you checking in from today?

Hi my friend, I am really well. I visited family this morning as I don’t often get the chance to do that. Now,, I am busy with putting together the booklet for my best off album that will be released on October 31st 2013. The pre-orders will start on the 4th of August so I have to make sure everything is ready by then.

That was my next question. A new EP by you, named ‘Russian Holiday’, gonna be released soon. Could you tell us some words about your new elaboration and partnership with Thomas Zwijsen?

I worked together with Thomas Zwijsen on King of Metal and I always wanted to do some acoustic shows again. We did some together and there we got the idea to make the acoustic EP.

Could you explain the reason that you named your new release under this strange name?

The lyrics were written when I was on tour with Paul Di’Anno in Russia in February last year. I was really homesick at the time, because I spent a lot of time away from home when I was recording and mixing the King of Metal.

Blaze, please introduce us your new guitarist Thomas Zwijsen. What’s your opinion if I would say that the first common thing between you and Thomas is Iron Maiden?

Yes, that is of course the most obvious thing. We also both like gadgets and have a lot of fun together.

Some people say that Blaze builds up his post-Iron Maiden career by doing things that relate absolutely with them. What you say about that?

When I left Iron Maiden, I created solo albums and promoted these albums. I am very proud of the songs that I made with Maiden and some of them will stay in my set when I perform, but we never intentionally sell shows based on the Iron Maiden name.

Did you get fun when you were touring with Paul Di’ Anno? I believe that a metal album with you and Di’ Anno could be a great punk/heavy collaboration. Did you think of this? If yes, could your fans be experienced that?

I would be open to it but I am not sure if Paul is interested in anything like that. It takes a lot of work and organization to get it together and he is planning to retire so I don’t think he’d be up for this project.

Well, could you tell me what your opinion on the Greek metal scene is?

I really like it. I wish I could check it out more but it is difficult to come to Greece.

What do you have behaved the Greek fans over the years and as a member of Maiden and as a solo artist;

My first visit to Greece was on vacation and after I visited again with Iron Maiden and was a fantastic experience. When The X-Factor album came out, went straight to No. 1 on the charts in Greece. The crowd was great and there will always be a special place in my heart for them for their generosity and how I behaved and as a member of Maiden but with Blaze Bayley. I always liked playing there and look forward to come again.

And now I would like to discuss about some deplorable events. We are in the end of 2010 and three big metal personas have passed away… Ronnie James Dio, Peter Steele and Paul Grey (SLIPKNOT). Is the year of 2010 the most donsie year of heavy metal?

It is very sad that all these people have passed away as they are brilliant musicians and performers. There are some big icons that we all love and it is devastating to see them pass away.

Right, I have beholden that heavy metal changes through the decades. Heavy and Thrash metal dominated over in 80’s, Death, black and power metal in 90’s and metalcore and nu metal in the 00’s in general. 2010 was the beginning sign of the new decade. What do you see for the future?

I have no idea! I just hope that I will be able to keep performing and making the music I like to make.

One year before you released a great album with Wolfsbane (Wolfsbane Save the World). What’s the news from these guys? Are you going touring or you are brewing a new album?

We have done some touring together. We haven’t had time to write new material since the album is out so if there is another album coming; it will be a while before it comes out. We aren’t touring this year, because we want to wait until we have new material out. We all have our work and jobs and it is difficult to get everybody together at the same time.
