HELLOWEEN & GAMMA RAY

Hellish Rock Part II

The leading names in German power metal conquered Finland yet again with Hellish Rock Tour Pt II.  Hellish Rock Pt II will be crisscrossing the global the whole year, in Europe, Asia, etc. All the three gigs on the Finnish soil were totally packed as over 4000 people had arrived to witness Gamma Ray and Helloween on the stage again. Both the bands truly enjoy a loyal and even a bit of a  fanatical following amongst the Finnish metal fans. That could be witnessed at the Tampere show, when the venue was nearly to explode when over 1000 fans had crawled in. Therefore, moving to any side was more or less a “mission impossible” task. The night was definitely full of triumphant power metal as both Gamma Ray and Helloween delivered a fistful of power metal with catchy melodies.

Besides Helloween and Gamma Ray, the Brazilian power symphony outfit called ShadowSide had been booked to open the night up. The four piece with female vocalist kicked the night off by offering symphonic power metal material. The female vocalist’s high pitched parts didn’t sound that convincing at all, the chick’s voice sounded occasionally out of tune. Instead her raspy voice in the Motorhead cover “Ace Of Spades” sounded more hard rocking. Unfortunately, the Brazilian symphonic power metallers will be facing the same merciless destiny like several other faceless metal bands.

When the equipment of ShadowSide had been dragged off the stage, the roadies prepared the stage rapidly for Hansen’s Gamma Ray. The set was kicked off by “Anywhere In The Galaxy”, in the wake of the opening riff Hansen literally ran from a smoke break to the stage. The set was a pure Gamma Ray firework from the beginning to the end. Even though the four piece kind of supported Helloween, Hansen’s character definitely breathed more metal than the Helloween guys altogether for sure. As for the set list, it consisted of the brand new songs from the new EP and of course the newer material from the most recent albums. Obviously, not everyone was pleased with the setlist as the mandatory classics such “Land of Free”, “Rebellion In A Dreamland” were missing. As well, the Helloween cover “Future World” could have been performed in the Helloween medley with the Helloween guys. All in all, the gig was pure Gamma Ray from the beginning to the end.

When the drums and backdrop of Gamma Ray had been carried off stage, the known intro hymn from Walls Of Jericho with the welcoming speech unleashed the nearly 90-minute set of another German power metal legend. The set was kicked off by the old tune “Eagle Fly Free” and was followed by brand new material from the latest opus STRAIGHT OUT OF HELL. Helloween sounded as they should without gimmicks, tricks, or treats. The band handled the gig with a routine grip, creating the feeling that they just do their day job and then go home to spend spare time with kids as it was so traditional and predictable in advance.
The set mostly consisted of the newer material from the most recent albums. Of course the older material had been included to the set. The mandatory Helloween medley with Kai Hansen was nothing but obvious. But but making the audience sing and cheer all in all three times was extremely dull and boooooooring! Why is it so complicated for bands just to focus on hammering songs down without these stupid cheers?! Whatever….the gig was concluded by “I Want Out” when both Gamma Ray and Helloween guys shared the stage together. That was the expected way to conclude the triuphinat power metal evening at a sold out and red hot venue.

The club was totally full and definitely over crowded. The deadly tired power metal fans were helped to find the right out of the venue.  Some tired metal fans were even dragged over the security wall. Some kind of water bottle in the front would have been more than welcomed. However the gig of Helloween and Gamma Ray offered a great deal of the extreme pleasure to all the metal fans.
