Time for another full album tour! Thrash masters Megadeth have decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their landmark album COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION with a short US tour that features the album in its entirety. I love full album concerts baby! Almost 3 years ago Megadeth did the same thing with RUST IN PEACE and we caught that tour 3 times! There are a few great songs from COUNTDOWN that never get played like “Ashes In Your Mouth”, and “High Speed Dirt” so I was pumped at the thought of getting those live! Plus, how would the bizarre “Captive Honour” be done live?

Tonight’s show is at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. It’s an old theater with some seats and a balcony but most of it is standing room for tonight. Stroudsburg is out by the Poconos and it is definitely a one horse town, other than the metalheads in line for the show there was nothing going on downtown. Sound quality was decent, no issues and the temperature was ok, not hot as hell like some other venues I’ve been to (Irving Plaza in NY anyone?).

Opening act tonight was San Francisco’s Kyng, a stoner metal band with some talent. Kyng sounded like a blend between fictional band Stillwater (?) from the movie ALMOST FAMOUS, Danzig, and The Allman Brothers. How’s that sound for a mix? Why are these guys opening for Megadeth? They definitely have some musical ability but I just wasn’t digging it tonight. The lighting on the stage was screwed up so it was very dark and hard to see the band. The vocals were too loud and the songs got redundant after the first 3 tracks or so. Hey at least it isn’t metalcore!

Megadeth hit the stage with “Trust” at 9:15 as each band member came out separately, Shawn first at the drumkit, David on the left of the stage, Chris on the right, and then the man himself, Dave from the left. The crowd of headbangers and drunken townies went completely nuts! Dave was not wielding the double guitar tonight, but it didn’t matter as Trust was heavy and more powerful than usual! I am slowly getting used to this as the opener but I still think a heavier song (“Holy Wars”) would be better. I was impressed by the incredible musicianship and tightness. The stage was set up with 3 screens that played videos and showed images that fit the songs. A fast, shredding “Hangar 18” came next. The guitar tuning sounded a little different to me, but in a good way. It’s great to get a different take on a concert staple sometimes. The screens showed cool images of Roswell, alien autopsy, radar, and defense computers! Crowd was surprisingly rabid with some moshing and one troublemaker was ejected, but the candy ass security let him back in later! Why is it that the bouncers have no teeth today? 20 years ago they used to throw you out into the parking lot on your face! “Public Enemy #1”, the only song featured from last year’s solid release THIRTEEN rocked hard and sounded superb. Things were off to a great start!

Now for what we had been waiting for, COUNTDOWN time! “Skin O’ Teeth” kicked off the album, blistering heavy, smoking, just fucking amazing! Usually saved for late in the set, ‘Symphony of Destruction” followed and the band nailed it as always. The best part of the set included killer versions of “Foreclosure of a Dream”, “This Was My Life” (THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU!), “Countdown to Extinction”, “High Speed Dirt” (DO IT IF YOU DARE!) and “Captive Honour” (AIN’T NO HONOR!). “Captive Honour” was much better and heavier than the album and was my favorite of the night. The voiceovers from the album were included keeping the strange vibe. Throughout the set Chris handled Marty Friedman’s leads brilliantly and put his own stamp on them. Dave’s a fucking virtuoso guitarist and his playing was flawless, riffs, solos, leads, rhythms, the man can do it all! His vocals were decent tonight and he didn’t struggle with the high notes. There were microphone problems though, during parts of “Psychotron” and “Ashes In Your Mouth” you couldn’t hear Dave’s vocals at all, I’m not sure if the mic wasn’t loud enough or it was cutting out. Generally, I feel like Dave’s vocals would benefit from a louder microphone. The guy from Kyng was too loud and Dave wasn’t loud enough, go figure. The only other song on COUTDOWN that is regularly played is “Sweating Bullets” which was good tonight but it’s been better other times. After “Ashes” we got great renditions of crowd pleasers “Peace Sells” and “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due” to close out the set.

Dave had a lot to say tonight between songs, the man is always entertaining and polarizing. The Mustaine for President slogan has been around for ages. Dave addressed that by saying if he were to run for office he would be attacked with claims of “Dave likes to do drugs”, “Dave likes to fuck around, etc.” He followed that up with “Don’t all politicians do those things?” Dave feels the government should help all people, not just certain people, but he doesn’t believe the current administration in the US is going to do that. He also expressed his love for Pennsylvania saying in some cities the pit is full of little peckered assholes but never in PA!

In 2010 Megadeth’s original intent was to just do a short RUST IN PEACE tour in the US, but it went so well they used set for a world tour. Hopefully the rest of the world gets the opportunity to hear COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION live in its entirety like we did on this tour! Megadeth rules!
