The Teutonic Terror tour shine brightly at the co-headline tour by Accept and Kreator, two pillars of the Germanic metal in their own field. Support on the tour is the doom/melodic death metal band Swallow the Sun. On September 12, they stop at the Phoenix concert theater in Toronto.

Swallow the Sun

The band Swallow the Sun is quite new to me, I haven’t heard much of them so I didn’t know what to expect from them live. At first sight, the band doesn’t really fit with the other two, but they still deliver an incredible set. It was a bit too short for some but as an opening act they succeed in warming up the place and grabbed the attention of the old schoolers and thrashers that fill the theater.

It is right on time, in a nearly full venue, screaming and hungry for metal that Swallow the Sun first enter the stage. Despite the lack of interaction with the crowd, they bring all of us into their own musical world. With a 6 song setlist, 3 from their most recent album Emerald Forest and the Blackbird, that just came out in North America, it feels more like discovering something new than hear our favorite songs live. I will surely enjoy seeing them again with a longer setlist or at least one that goes deeper into their 5 albums.

Accept

Next in line is the iconic German heavy metal Accept who are promoting their second album, Stalingrad, since their rise from their ashes. With the addition of Mark Tornillo on vocals, the band is more alive on stage than ever and they prove it once more.

Accept hit the stage with “Hung, Drawn and Quartered”. Energetic and powerful, straight to the point Accept don’t take any detours, they deliver pure heavy metal. The crowd quickly respond to every movement of the band, singing and headbanging at command. Allying classic and new songs, the show goes on without any downturn and before you know it, it is over. By the time the first note of “Balls to the Wall” start, knowing the end is near, the crowd echoed Mark’s razor sharp voice to tell farewell and adieu and come back to us as quickly as possible!

The new lineup is incredible; they truly enjoy being together on stage, uniting the crowd from the first to the last note. A true metal band like no other.

Kreator

A more than welcome intermission to recover from the teutonic massacre, grab a smoke and a beer to get ready for the last band act of the night. The stage is now covered with smoke, surrounded by skulls. The light barely gives us sight of the drums. The fans are already screaming and showing all signs that  they are ready for the battle. And they are served, Kreator kick in with “Phantom Antichrist”, it is loud, fast, aggressive and simply pure thrash metal. Barely giving us a chance to catch our breath they continue with the third song of the album, “From Flood into Fire”. Providing a non-stop flow of their art with continual headbanging and a circle pit in the crowd. Even then, Mille Petrozza keeps asking them for more. The frenzy goes on and on until the last call, “Flag of hate/Tormentor” shine as the last breath of the night.

Kreator give a good setlist, a tight sound, but the band look tired and far from being their best gig in the last few years. The verdict is easy: Accept stole the night. Even if Kreator wasn’t at their best, they deliver exactly what we pay for: pure thrash metal. The crowd slowly leaves the battlefield, exhausted but satisfied by the Teutonic assault.
