Mama Said (21st Anniversary Ed.)
Lenny was huge way back when but nowadays it seems his popularity has died. His first few albums were first rate and instant classics. How can you deny the impact of such greats as “Mr. Cabdriver”, “Always On The Run” and “Are You Gonna Go My Way?”? It’s simply not possible. MAMA SAID was Kravitz’ 2nd album and it is hard to believe it has been 21 years since it came out. Like the saying goes, Time Flies.
I will not discuss this album at all as we all know it and love it from start to finish. I will comment on the bonus material that is included on the disc after the original album and the full 2nd disc.
We are treated to a load of demos, live material, B-Sides and Unreleased Mixes. For a Lenny fan this is a real treat. You have to own this re-issue for the bonus material only. Some of the demos are Home Demos and are a little rough but that is to be expected. We get to see the early stages of the songs and how they were shaped into the ones we became familiar with. The pair of Studio B-Sides are fantastic while the instrumental version of “Always On The Run” doesn’t add much.
The live material gives us a glimpse of the energy and sound of Lenny on stage for those of us that never had the chance to see him perform live. It sounds as though the stage is where he was the most comfortable. He sounded great live and the music came across more powerful. It sounded more natural live.
This double disc is well worth the coin if you are a fan of Kravitz.
