When it comes to forefront heavy metal festivals in the UK, the East Midlands seems to have an unfeasibly large portion of the pie. Unlike some of its more commercially driven brothers though, Bloodstock Open Air (B-O-A) prides itself on being the UK’s biggest independent festival – as the website states ‘By the fans for the fans!’
In fact, Bloodstock was born out of the desire a festival the like of which has not been seen since the glory-draped days of Donnington’s Monsters of Rock. Starting out as an indoor event in 2001, this vision has quickly gained momentum and the first open air event arrived in 2005. Now in its eleventh year, 12,000 rabid metal-heads are expected to descend upon the picturesque Derbyshire countryside for four days of uncensored heavy metal as only Bloodstock knows how.
With the countdown on, even the ever-a-reason-to-complain British summer weather and the scheduling of the closing ceremony of ‘that’ summer sports event over the same weekend, there’s a palpable excitement in the air over the UK that is all Bloodstock. And with over 100 international rock and metal acts across four stages – including big hitters Behemoth, Machine Head – who’s set-list include five tracks from Burn My Eyes chosen by fans, Alice Cooper, Paradise Lost, Dimmu Borgir, Sepultura, Hatebreed, Anvil, Crowbar, and Testament – you’d not struggle to see why!
As if you’d need more reasons than that to part with the oh-so-reasonable ticket price, B-O-A 2012 is packed with other attractions such as a huge international metal market, the infamous late night metal karaoke, fairground rides, real ale festival bars, and an extra special VIP experience. But most of all Bloodstock continues to breed one of the best atmospheres around, so add your horns to the crowd!
