The Grand Illusion / Pieces of Eight Live [Blu-Ray]

2012, Eagle Vision

Rating: 4.5/5

As a fan of Styx I was really hoping for an amazing release. For the most part that is what I got. A great show, excellent tunes and exceptional quality. A very well executed release that all Styx fans should own.

The intro film is especially cool and similar visuals are used throughout the concert on the big screen at the back of the stage. Original bassist Chuck makes an appearance for parts of the show making this an extra special event. All the songs from both of these albums are played in the original running order. Some have probably never been performed live before. The band is in great shape and seem to be enjoying themselves on stage. For us Styx fans it is easy to tell that Dennis DeYoung was a major part of the Styx sound. Gowan is a decent singer in his own right but he just doesn’t cut it in Styx. His keyboard should be stationary so he cannot turn around and have his back to the audience. His stage presence leaves something to be desired. Tommy and JY need to try and get DeYoung back in the group.

An excellent release for all fans of these albums and Styx. While it is not as good as it could have been it is probably all we will ever get. So sit back, relax and enjoy!
