Lenny Kravitz

Black And White America

2011, Roadrunner Records

Rating: 3.5/5

Lenny Kravitz has been hit or miss for the most part with mostly miss with his last several releases. This album has a few really strong Rockers but some really bad Rap/Hip Hop-esque type drivel. The album starts off with a bang with the title track then goes into the funky “Come On Get It” which is quite catchy and has a bit of old Chili Peppers vibe to it. By track 5; “Rock Star City Life” he is back on track with another great rocker. This is one of the best songs on the album. It is the next track where he loses it with the dance/hip hop/(c)rap. Luckily he only has a few moments like this on the album. Even his 70’s style soul offerings are listenable and somewhat enjoyable.

Overall BLACK AND WHITE AMERICA is not a bad album. It is a bit diverse but you kind of expect that with Lenny. Like many albums there are really great songs and some crap. Luckily the good outweighs the bad here. This is the best album Kravitz has released in awhile.
