The Jeff Healey Band

Full Circle: The Live Anthology (CD/DVD Box Set)

2011, Convexe Ent.

Rating: 4/5

The initial release from Convexe Ent was the stellar LIVE AT GROSSMAN’S 1994 CD by The Jeff Healey Band. They have followed that up with this Live set of a DVD and 3 CD’s. This is quite the gamble for a new label on the block, especially this day in age with the music industry in the shape it is in. After the LIVE AT GROSSMAN’S 1994 disc I was really looking forward to this set.

I will start off with the DVD. Musically flawless. Jeff was one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived both on and off the stage. A genuine nice guy. What hurts this live DVD is the production. The video is not the clearest and looks like a straight transfer from VHS. For something filmed in ’91 it should be much clearer. The audio mix is what really kills this DVD. It is heavily panned to the right channel and not centered at all making you think your home stereo set-up is off. A little more care and attention to quality control would have made this DVD something you’d watch over and over again.

Convexe Ent. get back on track with the CD’s. There are three discs of live shows from three different years. Beginning in 1989 and going up to 1995. The quality here is exceptional as it was on the labels debut release: LIVE AT GROSSMAN’S 1994. I cannot say how fantastic these recordings are. Jeff was truly in his element when playing live. He was in a magic space and the music just flowed perfectly. That never changed from the ’89 show to the ’95 one. They are all equally amazing and sound beautiful.

Each and every guitarist (and music fan) should own these discs. This is how to play Blues music with a bit of a Rock edge. Jeff was a master guitarist and the world lost one of the best when he passed a few years ago. Hopefully Convexe will continue to release more CD’s of this quality. The only downfall of this set is the DVD portion but a somewhat small price to pay for such amazing music.
