Murder in the Front Row

Brutal Existence Radio has conducted a 60-minute interview with famed SF photographer Harald Oimoen, coauthor of the forthcoming book MURDER IN THE FRONT ROW: Shots from the Bay Area Thrash Metal Epicenter. The complete audio is available at this location:

Oimoen, whose photo of Cliff Burton appears on Metallica’s Ride the Lightning album, comments on his friendship with the late bassist:

“Cliff was like the greatest, most down-to-Earth guy ever. It’s interesting to think what Metallica would sound like now, if he was still withthe band. He was the most level-headed guy in the band, I think. They used to go to him, he was the tiebreaker when there was a decision to be made. If they were going to do something that was lame or stupid, he would kinda stop them from doing that. Cliff was amazing. He was brutally honest, too, if he didn’t like something he let you know about it.”

Harald Oimoen and Brian Lew have compiled 400 color and black-and-white live, candid, and studio photos in the large-format hardcover “Murder In The Front Row” book, an explosive eyewitness document of the sometimes violent mid-1980s San Francisco metal scene that launched METALLICA, EXODUS, TESTAMENT, DEATH ANGEL and POSSESSED, and first supported MEGADETH and SLAYER. The book will be available December 2011 wherever books are sold, including directly from publisher Bazillion Points Books with a limited two-sided exclusive poster-size dustjacket.
