UFO – The Chrysalis Years (1973 – 1979)

Released: 2011, Capitol Records

Rating: 4/5

UFO is one of those bands where the name is familiar but you cannot seem to name a song. This 5 Disc set is about to change that. THE CHRYSALIS YEARS combines the albums UFO did in the seventies that featured Michael Schenker on guitar, including an unreleased live show.

This 5 Disc set is an eye opener into the wonderful  world of UFO. Once you hear this set you will realize that you have heard UFO before but never realized who it was you were hearing and some of their songs are quite familiar such as “Doctor Doctor”, “Rock Bottom” and my personal favorite; “Only You Can Rock Me”. All of them have that distinct 70’s Rock sound to them yet do not come across as dated. Schenker was just a teenager when he joined the band but you would never say it from hearing him play. He sounds like a seasoned pro. The music is slightly polished like much of the music from this era but retains a slight edge at times to appeal to the more musically inclined listener. Many UFO fans are musicians and once you listen to these discs you can see why they appeal to them. They are all talented musicians that made some excellent music over the years.

For a UFO fan that has all the albums this is recommended for the Live show, For those that want to sample their music then this is the perfect place to start. This is the band in excellent form and at their most accessible. A very good package at a nice price.
