Gen Morphine: Guitarist and singer for Sin7Sins
Interviewed by Anders Sandvall
Thanks to Tom Hack at Massacre Records for setting up this interview
Thanks to Massacre Records for the promo pictures of the band.
Gen Morphine is the guitarist and one of two singers in the goth metal act Sin7Sins. I sat down and had a chat with Gen because I was really curious about the band and their debut album PERVERSION LTD. The band comes from The Netherlands. Besides Gen Morphine on vocals, there is a female singer called Lotus. If you’re into the goth metal scene then check out Sin7Sins they might be a band in your taste.
Sin7Sins new album is called PERVERSION LTD. How did you chose to name the album that?
Well we have a few perverted lyrics on the album. So we decided to have the title sound like a nasty company that deals in perversion. A cooperation of dirty minds so to speak.
How long did it take to write and record the album?
It took about a year in total to write / re-write and record all the songs.
Have you used any old demo songs on the new album or have you featured newly written material?
No, we have re-written 2 songs that appeared on an earlier demo the rest is all new.
Who in the band writes the material and what are your lyrics about?
I write all the material. Our lyrics are about all different kind of things some lyrics are fictional, some are written from personal experience. It differs totally per song.
Is it correct that you recorded the album before you were signed to a record label?
Yes that is correct. Nowadays you have to produce more then a good demo to get the attention of major labels. For this reason we decided to record an album.
Is the band a DIY band?
Yes we do a lot of things ourselves. Especially when it comes to writing, recording, merchandising, etc. But when it comes to mixing/ mastering, bookings, distribution, etc, it is best to get professional help.
Who has done the cover art-work and what do you think of it?
I totally love the artwork. It totally reflects the album. It was done by a personal friend of mine who has done a lot of band-artwork for a lot of famous bands. www.studiomystica.nl
What was the thought behind the art-work?
We wanted a bit of a post-nuclear picture that reflected something perverted and grim. And a little girl with filthy clothes, a ragged doll and a gas-mask in a shot-up environment really suited that picture.
How would you like to describe what kind of music Sin7Sins play? I ask because I have read numerous of genres under which critics have out your music in.
I would personally just call it ‘Female Fronted Metal’. No more, no less. I also noticed in the press that they place us under various genres. To me that is a compliment because it shows that we do something different. Something that can’t be stereotyped or revered to a certain genre or band.
You featured the song “Crossroad 666” on your MySpace site before you released the album. Did the fans like the song?
Yes, this was one of the two songs we had previously released on a demo, so we already knew the reactions to this song. We chose this song to show the progress we made as a band and as a teaser to the album of course.
Did you have any release party to celebrate the album? If you did when and where did it take place and how was it?
Not really no. We got signed to Massacre Records and just 4 weeks after that the album was launched worldwide. It went really fast all of a sudden and we did not have any time organize such an event.
Are there any plans on shooting a video to any of the songs?
Yes there are plans to do so. But we are currently also starting recordings for our second album so we might choose to have our first video be one of that album. Has been decided yet.
The album has been out for a while now and have you ready any reviews yet? What do the critics have to say about PERVERSION LTD?
Well it is very funny to read all the reviews. Where for some parts reviewers praise you others burn you down over the same thing. And again you notice that over all they cannot really place or categorize us. But the album is received very well in general.
Do you care about what critics write about you?
Not really. Of course it sometimes affects your mood but as said before some people love you for something and others hate you over the same. But getting a really good review in a well known magazine / webzine never gets old 😉
There are now a bunch of successful bands that all are fronted by a female singer like Nightwish, Lacuna Coil and Epica to mention a few, are you ever compared with these acts and what do you think of being compared with them?
Yes we have been compared to these bands. And I think people automatically do so because they will put you into that list of bands merely because you have a female singer. But of course it is no bad thing to be compared with such great bands. I can only hope to achieve the status these bands have one day.
In retrospect are you happy with the outcome of the album?
Yes very much so. It opened up a huge numbers of doors for us as a band.
Where did you record the album and who has produced it?
We recorded the album at several locations throughout Europe. Some things in professional studio’s others at my studio at home.
How come you chose to record the album in Subsound Studio?
Victor Love worked for this studio at the time but most of the work was done in his own studio. But for some reason the name was picked up by our label and placed on the album. So there have been things done for the album in the Subsound but we did not record the entire album in Rome.
How did you get in touch with Victor Love?
Via internet. I merely approached him if he was interested and he responded very positively.
What was the best thing to work with Love and what do you think is his strongest feature as producer?
I have to say that I produced most of the album myself. We approached Victor after the recordings for the mixing and mastering part. But what I can say is that working with Victor is very pleasant because he understands you as a (metal) musician. When you come up with an idea it takes little effort to transport that idea to him. He understands very well how things should sound.
Do you think that you’re gonna work with Love in the future?
We probably will, haven’t gotten around to talk to him about it yet. We shall see what the future brings.
Who has mixed and mastered the album?
Victor Love as mentioned above.
Massacre Records is the home for Sin7Sins today but was it hard to land a deal?
Not really to be honest. They were very interested from the start and almost immediately offered us a deal after contacting them.
How come you signed for Massacre?
Massacre is a very known and major label. They have a worldwide distribution and tons of experience. They offered us a fantastic deal, which is very rare for a fairly unknown band these days. With all this combined they were the right choice for us.
Are you happy with the work that the label have put into the album and the band so far?
Yes, Massacre has really put a lot of effort into promoting and releasing the album for which we are of course very grateful.
For how many albums have you signed on for?
We have signed for four albums in total.
Are you co-operating with any booking agency or management at the moment?
Yes we have one of the best Dutch bookers on our side named Tjerk Maas. He works for Zwaardvis Booking agency.
Is the album released worldwide today? I know that the album is released as download but is it available to purchase in stores?
The album is available in stores worldwide. And you can of course also order it at various online web stores.
When and where was the band started and by who?
I started the band together with our singer Lotus at the end of 2007.
Is Sin7Sins a band or a project?
Sin7sinS is a band. We started as a project but very quickly turned into a real band.
Is the current line-up the original line-up?
Except for our drummer it is.
Are you still friends with your drummer Armada XTC that recently left the band?
Yes I still see him at a regular basis as he is a very good friend of mine. With Sin7sinS becoming more and more time consuming he had to choose between his job and his band. Unfortunately he had to choose for his job.
Is the search for a new drummer going on or are you going to take in a session drummer in the meantime?
We have recently found a new drummer named Heresy 101. He is a perfect match for us as a band and we are very happy to have him on board with us.
Where does the band name come from?
Sin7sinS stands for do what you want to do. Do not be held back by others and be who you want to be. Hedonism is a nice general translation for the band name.
Has any of the members been involved other bands or project besides Sin7Sins?
We have all played in different kinds of metal bands before Sin7sinS. But currently we are all focused on Sin7sinS.
Have you released any demos before the release of the album?
Yes, we have released a 4 song demo about a year before the album.
Have you done a lot of live shows during the years?
We have played a fair number of shows but with the album out now we will be playing a lot more than we have done in the past.
I read that you were out on a tour with Jagermeister in 2008 could you tell us more about that tour?
That was a Tour sponsored by Jägermeister. We lined-up with two other female fronted bands one of them being Izegrim. We played a large number of shows with them and for us as a band it was a great experience to grow into what we are today.
Have you done any touring outside the Netherlands yet?
Yes we have done a couple of shows abroad but we will hopefully do more of them in the near future.
Do the members got any common musical idol or artist that they look up to or are influenced by?
No we are all influenced by many different bands and artists.
How’s the metal scene doing in the Netherlands?
The Dutch metal scene could be better. Especially in comparison with countries such as Germany. Unfortunately there isn’t that much attention for metal bands in Holland itself.
Why have you chosen to have stage-names?
Because those are the names we chose to call ourselves. Mainly because our real names aren’t very exciting and almost impossible to pronounce for people who do not speak Dutch.
Where in the world do you have the most loyal and solid fanbase?
Currently in Holland. Mainly because we haven’t been touring as much abroad as we would like to do. But we receive fan mail from across the world. Which is totally awesome.
Are you going to try to conquer the North American or Asia market soon?
Hopefully we will. Currently we are focusing on the European market and we will see what comes after that. First things first.
Do yo think it’s important to be active on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter?
Yes. It is the way to reach your fans nowadays.
Are you booked for any festival shows during the summer?
We already have a few festivals confirmed on our website but more updates will follow soon.
Are there any plans on heading out on tour through Europe this summer or fall?
We are currently busy searching for a tour as support for the end of this year. So keep checking our website for updates.
Are you currently working on any new album?
Yes we have recently started recording our second album which will be entitled CARNIVAL OF NO TOMORROW.
Could you give the readers three reasons why they should buy PERVERSION LTD?
We bring some thing new, something different and something exciting to the female fronted metal genre. So be sure to check us out.
What are the plans for the band during 2011?
Tour, record and release our second album at the end of this year.
Finally, do you have any words of wisdom for everyone out there who reads this?
Be sure to check us out at our website www.sin7sins.com
That was all I had for now. Thanks for taking the time to make this interview, I wish you all the best in the future.
And the same to you. Thank you for the interview.
