John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers

70th Birthday Concert (Blu-Ray)

2009, Eagle Vision

Rating: 4/5

John Mayall has been releasing albums steadily since the mid 60’s and has helped launch the careers of such greats as Mick Taylor, Peter Green and Eric Clapton. This concert event is not only a testament to those times it more importantly celebrates his 70th Birthday.

Mayall is joined onstage by both Taylor and Clapton for this 2hr plus concert film. Surprisingly it is not Clapton that takes the guest appearance spotlight but former Rolling Stone, Taylor. Clapton just stands by and plays in the background while Mick lets loose and shows the audience what blues-based rock guitar is all about. Many year has passed since his time in the Stones and several more since his time with The Bluesbreakers but that doesn’t stop him from demonstrating why he was such an acclaimed guitarist to begin with. While Mick may be stealing the guest spotlight it is clearly Mayall at center stage. At the age of 70 he can still belt out the tunes with the emotion and feelings he had back when he first did them. His voice may have changed a bit over the years but he still sounds amazing, maybe even better suited to the material now. Just being able to witness this legend onstage with such great players backing him up is a true spectacle.

An excellent glimpse into the lengthily career of John Mayall. After watching this extraordinary concert it is no trouble to see why he is heralded as a Blues great.
