Day 4 (5th July, Sunday)
HannTu: The sun was beginning to dip by the time I crawled out of my tent for Legion of the Damned. The Dutch thrashers are solid as rock, hardly ever throwing up any surprises but putting on a damn good performance every time they play. With no-nonsense no-frills headbangers like ‘Son of the Jackal’, ‘Werewolf Corpse’ and ‘Legion of the Damned’, they’re in, ripping your head off, and gone before you have time to draw breath.
Trease: Lamb of God, a band I had high hopes for, especially considering drummer Chris Adler’s flamboyant style was a major influence on my own playing a few years ago. As the skies darkened to black over Metal Camp, Virginia’s leaders of ‘Pure American Metal’- Lamb of God, kicked off their set with ‘In Your Words’. Energetic to say the least, and clearly a band who know how to work an entire stage.
However it was the second song, ‘Set To Fail’, that would set the tone for the rest of the performance. While guitarist Willie Adler has created an awesome array of riffs on disc, his sloppy playing technique was clearly evident here. I thought it best not to voice my opinion when we ran into Mr Adler after the show, hanging outside the tour bus in a vain attempt at basking in rockstar glory. I almost changed my mind when he mentioned to me ‘Do you know who I am?’
Well man, sorry for not going all fan girl on you, but I’m more sorry that you completely fucked up that show.
Sloppiness aside, a heaving circle pit was established during ‘Redneck’, and as I watched the massive crowd from the hill side it was clear just how many people crawled out of putrid tents for these guys.
