Sadistic Intent - Enrique2.jpg

Sometimes, mostly on rare occasions, things just tend to happen spontaneously. Like for example yesterday evening, I saw Enrique Chavez on line when I was doing mail via Myspace site – knowing he´s friends with the guys of Sadistic Intent. I just dropped him a note, asking politely whether he could send out my greetings to my friends in Sadistic Intent, but also remembering that both me and Enrique used to be in touch many years ago – and also knowing the fact he also sang in Sadistic Intent in the past (IMPENDING DOOM… is a fuckin´ brilliant release from this band – check it out!).

Then we started discussing about things, and especially the past times including the tape trading scene, how the scene was back in those ´golden times of 80´s´, Enrique´s involvement with Sadistic Intent, some worth mentioning new bands of today´s metal scene, etc. etc. What basically happened, we were simply chatting and one topic led to another, and our whole conversation turned out to be so interesting and exciting that I suggested Enrique eventually that would he mind if I published our conversation in Metal-Rules.com. In fact, he felt honored about my idea, so here is the whole conversation we went through on line on Monday evening, 20th of July 2009. Something worth reading for the old school metal heads, and especially the Sadistic Intent fans, so enjoy… ;o)

9:22 PM

Luxi:

Hey Enrique! It´s Luxi from Finland here. How R U doing man? I am friends with the guys of Sadistic Intent, so would you say a hello from me specially to the Cortez brothers. Thanks man!

……………………………………………………………………

9:23 PM

Enrique:

Of course! How is life with you? I believe we were in touch years ago before the internet. You introduced me to Sentenced.

……………………………………………………………………

9:24 PM

Luxi:

Yes, I remember you clearly. You also know Humberto Sanchez who has been living in Helsinki for many years already. We met at Wacken if I remember correctly, in 2000 or 2001? You were there with the guys of Agent Steel.

……………………………………………………………………

9:25 PM

Enrique:

Yeah, of course. Humberto was one of the people responsible for taking Sadistic Intent to Mexico. That´s back when I was singing for Sadistic Intent. Yeah, I do remember. Cool to hear from you.

……………………………………………………………………

9:26 PM

Luxi:

Oh yes, I remember you being the singer of S.I. Nice to hear from you after all these years too. :o)

……………………………………………………………………

9:28 PM

Enrique:

I sang with them live about 2 months ago in Los Angeles. The first time I performed with them in over 17 years.

……………………………………………………………………

9:29 PM

Enrique:

I’ve seen your name throughout the scene for years. That’s cool that you’ve kept busy.

……………………………………………………………………

9:29 PM

Luxi:

I read about that, too. Must have been a cool experience for you to perform w/ them after so many years. How was it? Yes, Metal-Rules.com keeps me constantly busy nowadays, among other things of course.

……………………………………………………………………

9:31 PM

Enrique:

It was a very nervous experience. We agreed to do it 4 days before the show. There was alot of the older metal heads there that don’t even go to shows anymore, as well as new kids who were probably 2-3 years old the last time that I sang. But they are fans of Sadistic Intent and I couldn’t disappoint. Nervous and all I got up on stage and sang three songs with the guys. It felt like I never left. The only problem was the P.A. went down and the vocals were not heard through most of the short set.! It was disappointing but exciting and the fans appreciated the fact that we did it.

Sadistic Intent - Enrique3.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

9:32 PM

Luxi:

Wow… Did some of the guys in the audience film the show? I mean, there could be a very potential footage for a Sadistic Intent DVD if they will ever make one, featuring you doing all those old Sadistic Intent songs.

……………………………………………………………………

9:33 PM

Enrique:

That would be cool. It was honestly an honor to have shared the stage with my metal brothers once again.

……………………………………………………………………

9:33 PM

Luxi:

Oh, sorry to hear about the sound problems, bro. That kind of DVD would be something totally special for sure for the true fans of the band.

……………………………………………………………………

9:34 PM

Enrique:

A DVD, wow… that would be cool. Have you noticed that there is no footage on YouTube of me performing with the band? Someone did film it but I haven’t seen it.

……………………………………………………………………

9:34 PM

Luxi:

Yes, I have noticed that. You should try seriously to get a hold of that footage.

……………………………………………………………………

9:35 PM

Enrique:

There is a plenty of great quality recordings from our live shows in the early 90’s but no one has done anything about it.

……………………………………………………………………

9:35 PM

Luxi:

I am sure it would be a killer idea to release a DVD like that, you performing those old songs with them.

……………………………………………………………………

9:36 PM

Enrique:

I’ve personally been asked to do the same. But that is not myt band anymore… It’s up to the Cortez brothers.

……………………………………………………………………

9:37 PM

Luxi:

Someone should consider releasing some of them. I am sure there is someone out there who is such a die-hard Sadistic Intent fan to put out a CD/DVD with all those old killer S. I. recordings in it.

……………………………………………………………………

9:37 PM

Enrique:

I just was asked recently by Dave Rotten of Xtreme Music to re-release IMPENDING DOOM.

Sadistic Intent - Impending.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

9:37 PM

Luxi:

Now that would be a SUPERB idea!!!

……………………………………………………………………

9:38 PM

Enrique:

I mentioned it to Rick Cortez but he didn’t even bother talking about it. So I left it alone.

……………………………………………………………………

9:38 PM

Luxi:

It is very hard to come by a good quality copy of IMPENDING DOOM EP these days.

……………………………………………………………………

9:38 PM

Enrique:

Dave Rotten wanted to re-release it with a DVD footage and rare rehearsal but…

……………………………………………………………………

9:39 PM

Luxi:

I have the original cassette from I.D., released by Wild Rags!

……………………………………………………………………

9:39 PM

Enrique:

The brothers have the master recordings and I’m sure they could re-enter the studio to remix and remaster it, but again… it’s up to them.

……………………………………………………………………

9:39 PM

Luxi:

Yes, Dave really understands what underground gems just scream to be re-released again… ;o) Oh, aren´t they busy with preparing new songs for a new Sadistic Intent release also?

……………………………………………………………………

9:40 PM

Enrique:

He’s a great of mine and I told him it would be an honor to have it released through him.

……………………………………………………………………

9:40 PM

Luxi:

Or, is their record store (Dark Realm) taking so much time from them nowadays that they don´t have time to fully concentrate on their new material?

……………………………………………………………………

9:40 PM

Enrique:

People ask me about new Sadistic Intent but they keep it really quiet even to me.

Sadistic Intent - A Calm.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

9:41 PM

Luxi:

Dave is also an old friend of mine. I drew the Avulsed band logo for them back in the day.

……………………………………………………………………

9:42 PM

Enrique:

I remember him mentioning that to me when I visited and stayed at his house in Spain. Have you heard any new good bands lately?

……………………………………………………………………

9:42 PM

Luxi:

Dave is a nice guy, very polite and everything. New bands? New old school sounding thrash- or death metal bands, you mean?

……………………………………………………………………

9:43 PM

Enrique:

I love that old death/black metal feel! Oh, I just remembered. There is pics on Myspace of the last Sadistic Intent gig with me on vocals.

……………………………………………………………………

9:44 PM

Luxi:

Lately I found this Finnish old school thrash band called Forced Kill, and they kill! If you are into old Sacrifice/Dark Angel/Slayer type of stuff, then this band is definitely for you. :o)

……………………………………………………………………

9:44 PM

Enrique:

Cool… I’m looking them up right now. Dark Angel/Sacrifice… Oooo yeah!!

……………………………………………………………………

9:44 PM

Luxi:

I need to check those pics out as soon as I can! Thanks for mentioning about them. As for Forced Kill, check them out from here: http://www.myspace.com/forcedkill Listen to especially the last song, "Renegade (to the death)".

……………………………………………………………………

9:46 PM

Enrique:

Awesome. I also like Violator from Brazil, I believe.

……………………………………………………………………

9:47 PM

Luxi:

Also, the new album from Deströyer 666, titled DEFIANCE, is a pretty badass, I can tell! Violator rips in my books immensely as well!! Killer band!!

……………………………………………………………………

9:47 PM

Enrique:

What do you think of this whole thrash resurgence? I personally like a lot of the bands.

Sadistic Intent - demo cover.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

9:48 PM

Luxi:

I feel the same way. As far as new thrash bands go, bands like Gama Bomb, Evile, Warbringer, HeXeN, Merciless, etc. – they are all damn good at what they do in terms of old school thrash, I think. Check out Jumalation from Finland as well if you don´t get enough from the old school thrash!! ;o)

……………………………………………………………………

9:50 PM

Enrique:

Wow, I’m trying to catch up with all these bands.

……………………………………………………………………

9:50 PM

Luxi:

I have always been into old school thrash/death metal, never stopped liking it. Check Jumalation at: http://www.myspace.com/jumalation

……………………………………………………………………

9:52 PM

Enrique:

It’s weird when I talk to an old friend from school and they ask me: "Your still into that?"

……………………………………………………………………

9:52 PM

Luxi:

Ha-ha! Some persons cannot be changed, like not you – or not me! ;o)

……………………………………………………………………

9:53 PM

Enrique:

To me I never liked it because it was cool. I liked for what it is. The energy, the feel… and the life style, etc.

……………………………………………………………………

9:54 PM

Luxi:

Exactly!! You nailed it pretty nicely there already!

……………………………………………………………………

9:55 PM

Enrique:

Lately I find myself listening to the early stuff: Armored Saint, Malice, Steeler, Dark Angel etc. I was just listening to early Bathory when you got in touch.

……………………………………………………………………

9:56 PM

Luxi:

Yeah, I think I have also come a full cirle back to all that music where I started from. I know it´s kinda a big cliche to say, but the 80´s is still the best decade for metal, and nothing can change that fact for me… EVER!!!

……………………………………………………………………

9:57 PM

Enrique:

Exactly. I try and try to keep up with what’s new but it’s so hard these days. I’ve been listening to 80’s myself. Lita Ford, Ozzy Osbourne, etc. HAUNTING THE CHAPEL has been playing in my car lately.

Sadistic Intent - Enrique1.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

9:58 PM

Luxi:

I know it is hard to follow the scene these days because there are so many new metal bands popping up all the time. Luckily I have this sort of ´hobby´ in Metal-Rules.com, and new metal bands contact me for reviews and stuff.

……………………………………………………………………

9:58 PM

Enrique:

Yeah, that’s cool. I wish I had more time to either write or do an internet thing. The last I did was being the Vice President of World War III Music.

……………………………………………………………………

10:00 PM

Luxi:

Cool!!

……………………………………………………………………

10:00 PM

Enrique:

Responsible for U.S. releases of Avulsed, Headhunter BC, Hate, Centinex, Belphegor, Carpathian Forest, Aborym, etc.

……………………………………………………………………

10:00 PM

Luxi:

Yes, I remember that label.

……………………………………………………………………

10:01 PM

Enrique:

Before that I worked for Dwell Records and released the first U.S. release by Behemoth, also Mayhem live record as well as tons of tributes.

……………………………………………………………………

10:01 PM

Luxi:

Maybe I also should be mentioned one funny thing to you that happened to me during this spring. Namely I, kind of by accident, sang some backing vocal stuff for a relatively new Finnish death metal band called Survivors Zero, together with some of the S.Z. guys and a friend of mine. We sang the backing vocals for a song called "Armageddon Cult" – and what is the funny part of the story, we were all more or less drunk as hell. Just give a listen to the song and let me know what you think of it. -> H E R E <-  Survivors Zero features f.ex. the drummer from Impaled Nazarene.

……………………………………………………………………

10:02 PM

Enrique:

I’m listening to it now…. Years ago I did two Celtic Frost songs in the studio – and they are both unreleased ´til now, featuring Joel Marquez (ex-Sadistic Intent) and members of Anarchus (Mexico).

……………………………………………………………………

10:03 PM

Luxi:

Damn, those two songs should get released one way or the other, Celtic Frost being one of my favorite bands.

……………………………………………………………………

10:04 PM

Enrique:

It’s a great sound that we got together in one weekend and recorded them in Mexico City. They were meant for the Celtic Frost tribute but did’nt make it on time.

Sadistic Intent - Promo1.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

10:05 PM

Luxi:

Oh shit. I feel sorry for you. Sounds like a wasted time… :o/

……………………………………………………………………

10:07 PM

Enrique:

The recording had a raw feel to it. It was cool. "Into the Crypts of Rays" and "Visual Aggressions" were those two Frost songs that we covered from them, btw.

……………………………………………………………………

10:07 PM

Luxi:

Yeah, they are both such killer Frost songs!!

……………………………………………………………………

10:08 PM

Enrique:

Maybe one day someone will release them?! Actually I’m thinking of uploading them to Myspace.

……………………………………………………………………

10:09 PM

Luxi:

Now that would be a very cool idea! Please do so… ;o)

……………………………………………………………………

10:11 PM

Luxi:

Do you have any recent band projects going on?

……………………………………………………………………

10:13 PM

Enrique:

Nothing. I’ve been asked to do back up vocals for several bands but nothing has been solid. There is one band from Los Angeles who were around back in the early 90’s who want to record again and they have asked me to help with the vocals. I’ll probably do it just to help them out. sadistic Intent was the band I sang for and nothing has been interesting enough to do full time. I was a fan of the Cortez brothers original band Devastation before I joined them and the name changed to Sadistic Intent. Was that you on the Vocals, or just the back up? What about the great band Rippikoulu?

……………………………………………………………………

10:17 PM

Luxi:

I was in the back-up vocals with some of the band members. Like I already told you earlier, the whole thing just happened spontaneously when I actually went to their advance listening session of their forth-coming debut album, CMXCIX. As for Rippikoulu… As far as my mind can still remember anything, I remember someone was going to release their old demos on CD. Do not remember any longer who should have done it?

……………………………………………………………………

10:18 PM

Enrique:

Just finished listening to it (Survivors Zero) for the second time… Awesome!!

……………………………………………………………………

10:19 PM

Luxi:

Quite damn technical shit if you ask from me respectively…

Sadistic Intent - Promo2.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

10:19 PM

Enrique:

Back when I was doing Gothic Records we had a contract to release the demo on CD but then our contact in the band died I believe and the deal was lost.

……………………………………………………………………

10:19 PM

Luxi:

Also, there has been some talk about releasing all Abhorrence stuff on CD too. I am still in touch with the Abhorrence vocalist Jukka Kolehmainen from time to time. He´s a friend of mine.

……………………………………………………………………

10:20 PM

Enrique:

Abhorrence! Wow, another great band!

……………………………………………………………………

10:22 PM

Luxi:

Yes, I was just talking with Jukka about getting all that old Abhorrence shit released on CD, and who knows it may just happen some day. Nowadays Jukka is more into stoner/doom/sludge type of bands, arranging concerts for them and stuff.

……………………………………………………………………

10:22 PM

Enrique:

Cool. I have so much respect for people who continue involved.

……………………………………………………………………

10:24 PM

Enrique:

You know I remember the first time we met Jesse Pintado at a party we were playing, and he came up to us and introduced himself and understood exactly where and what we were doing. He introduced us to fanzines and the whole underground thing.

……………………………………………………………………

10:24 PM

Luxi:

Cool… Just too bad Jesse is no longer among us. Met him at Wacken the same year you were there.

……………………………………………………………………

10:25 PM

Enrique:

Other people were laughing and at one time were even spitting at us while we were playing. Yeah, he will be remembered. I hung out with him at a Krisiun, Behemoth, Morbid Angel gig one night, and shortly after I found out he died.

……………………………………………………………………

10:26 PM

Luxi:

Uh… :o/  Such hard times for everyone who knew him personally.

……………………………………………………………………

10:27 PM

Enrique:

If I could go back in time I would redo the whole thing again. Yeah, Jesse is missed… Oh, did you ever hear of an L.A. band called Darkness L.A.?

Sadistic Intent - Promo3.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

10:28 PM

Luxi:

Nope, but Necrophagia L.A. I surely heard!! Necrophagia L.A.´s 3-song demo, titled IT BEGAN WITH A TWISTED DREAM… from 1987, was such a killer demo from them!! Very Dark Angel-ish/Slayer-ish type of effort!

……………………………………………………………………

10:29 PM

Enrique:

Necrophagia L.A. is cool. That’s a great friend of mine. Jerry Battle, he and I are the ones responsible for WWIII Music/Mercenary Music. Yeah! Darkness L.A. was this professional sounding Kreator style band.

……………………………………………………………………

10:30 PM

Luxi:

Now when you reminded me of the name Necrophagia, I got this email just this morning. What a coincidence really… "Hello Luxi, My name is Dennis. I was trying to locate some old friends of mine and your name popped up. Yes, it was a Google Search. Back in the 80’s I used to be friends with, and would roadie for, Necrophagia L.A. I’ve known the singer, Ed (Lalo), Tom the bass player, and Joey the lead guitarist, since junior high and I remember the first incarnation of the band. I specifically remember them with keyboards and covering "Sweet Cheater" by Ratt. I was there in the studio when they recorded their Demo. I remember it was in a studio across the street from the Hannah-Barbera studios. It was an all-nighter. We used to hang out with Mark Caro from Abattoir a lot. He was Joey’s guitar teacher. The reason I’m writing to you is because from what I understand, you interviewed them. I hope I have this right. I’ve lost touch with them and I was hoping you had some contact information. Specifically Ed, Joey  or Tom. Hope to hear from you soon. -Dennis!"

……………………………………………………………………

10:31 PM

Luxi:

Yes, I did interview them for a Finnish magazine called Isten back in 1989 or something. Could you help the guy? I have no contacts with Necrophagia L.A. anymore…

……………………………………………………………………

10:31 PM

Enrique:

Wow! I’m only in touch with Jerry Battle. But I know for a fact he is in touch with Lalo the ex-singer. Sure I could try and help him.

……………………………………………………………………

10:32 PM

Luxi:

This guy´s email address is: lonevesparado@yahoo.com

……………………………………………………………………

10:33 PM

Enrique:

Isten Magazine? That’s where I remember you from. I still have 1 or 2 different mags.

……………………………………………………………………

10:33 PM

Luxi:

Thanks man! That would be so nice of you if you helped that guy to get in touch with some of the ex-members of Necrophagia L.A.! And speaking of Isten – yes, I did lots of band interviews with underground metal bands for that magazine back in the day – with Autopsy, Necrophagia L.A., Hobbs Angel of Dead, Armoros, Order From Chaos, Sepultura, Disciples of Power, Obliveon, etc. etc.

……………………………………………………………………

7/20/2009

10:35 PM

Enrique:

I just wrote to him. I sent him an email…

……………………………………………………………………

10:36 PM

Luxi:

Cool!! That was so kind of you! Greatly appreciated, man!! :o)

Sadistic - live3.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

10:36 PM

Enrique:

What do you think about the ‘new’ Possessed. Personally I think it’s cool but it’s not Possessed.

……………………………………………………………………

10:37 PM

Luxi:

You mean, Sadistic Intent playing Possessed songs, and only having Jeff on vocals. ;o)

……………………………………………………………………

10:38 PM

Enrique:

Yeah…

……………………………………………………………………

10:38 PM

Luxi:

It is not Possessed, but those guys are the only guys you can still do it right.

……………………………………………………………………

10:38 PM

Enrique:

I agree.

……………………………………………………………………

10:38 PM

Luxi:

I actually could not imagine any other fellows to replace old Possessed guys but the guys from S.I.

……………………………………………………………………

10:39 PM

Enrique:

It was weird that Possessed being such an influence on Sadistic’s sound and they play in the band.

……………………………………………………………………

10:39 PM

Luxi:

Yeah, it is kinda weird but I still like it. They have got a good grip on all that old Possessed material though.

……………………………………………………………………

10:40 PM

Enrique:

I remember when we started wearing the leather and spikes/metal studs and headbanging people would be screaming ´fake Slayer, fake Possessed!!’

……………………………………………………………………

10:40 PM

Luxi:

Ha-ha, that´s childish behavior from those guys back then. They obviously knew nothing. Sadistic Intent, along with Possessed naturally, played here in Finland at Jalometalli festival last year.

Sadistic - live2.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

10:41 PM

Enrique:

They told me that you were there. They were surprised to hear that I already knew you from 10+ years back. Remember we were 16-17 years old. But we showed them!

……………………………………………………………………

10:42 PM

Luxi:

Ha-ha, I guess you just did so… ;o) Yeah, those really were the days when we were all young and full of sheer enthusiasm for new metal bands.

……………………………………………………………………

10:43 PM

Enrique:

Our first stage show was opening for Dark Angel in 1989 in front of 2500 people and we were doing "Open Casket" from Death. The place went insane.

……………………………………………………………………

10:43 PM

Luxi:

Wo-hoo!! Must have been such a cool experience to play for THAT many people at that time!

……………………………………………………………………

10:43 PM

Enrique:

I have pictures of that show. Although we hadn’t started wearing the leather yet. That was a very memorable show. Stick from Doom was there with Jesse Pintado.

……………………………………………………………………

10:45 PM

Luxi:

That is very nice to hear. Vintage photos/posters are always nice gems to cherish a little bit.

……………………………………………………………………

10:46 PM

Enrique:

Some of the fans in the crowd that were going crazy for us have now turned into close friends. I wish someone would release a cool DVD with pictures, flyers, live recordings. I miss singing for that band.

……………………………………………………………………

10:47 PM

Luxi:

Just got a crazy idea regarding this conversation if I released this in Metal-Rules.com as an interview with ex-Sadistic Intent singer Enrique Chavez. Do you think it would be a cool idea? ……………………………………………………………………

10:48 PM

Luxi:

But of course I would not do that without your permission, so do not worry.

……………………………………………………………………

10:48 PM

Enrique:

I’d be honored! And I’m sure their are fans who would appreciate to hear these words.

Sadistic - live1.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

10:50 PM

Enrique:

Sadistic Intent has and will be one of my favorite bands even after I left. This is something I am very proud. I’m glad I was there from the beginning and I will be their til the end!

……………………………………………………………………

10:51 PM

Luxi:

Yes, I appreciate them for everything what they are – and what they represent even nowadays. They have been very faithful to their old school death metal sound for all these years. So yeah, you should feel proud of being a part of them.

……………………………………………………………………

10:56 PM

Enrique:

Even when the second wave Of black metal came around and death metal bands were persecuted for standing their ground. Their is only a handful of bands who remained. Sadistic Intent, Incantation, Immolation, Morbid Angel and a few others.

……………………………………………………………………

10:57 PM

Enrique:

I remember even Kreator took a different style. Before returning to their roots.

……………………………………………………………………

10:58 PM

Luxi:

Yeah, couldn´t agree more with you about this.

……………………………………………………………………

10:59 PM

Enrique:

Death metal survived and it has come around. And I strongly believe that the fans of today have finally understood bands like Sadistic Intent.

……………………………………………………………………

11:00 PM

Enrique:

It’s strange to me to see young metal fans wearing Sadistic Intent t-shirts sometimes bootlegs with a picture on their back and I’m in it. Most don’t know it’s me who walks or talks to them sometimes, he-he!

……………………………………………………………………

11:01 PM

Luxi:

Many old school death metal bands, like Asphyx, Pestilence and Atheist for example, have all reformed now and made their comebacks.

……………………………………………………………………

11:01 PM

Enrique:

But It’s an awesome feeling to know that we manged to carve a name in the death metal world. That’s right! I’m waiting for new Autopsy as well!

……………………………………………………………………

11:02 PM

Luxi:

Death metal is doing really well these days, which is a good thing.

Sadistic - oldlive.jpg

……………………………………………………………………

11:03 PM

Enrique:

One thing Luxi that still gives me chills when I think about it. Is that we never recorded a full length record or signed to any known label and yet we managed to get out there. That’s a great feeling.

……………………………………………………………………

11:04 PM

Luxi:

Got this email from Chris himself recently in which he said to be really excited about a new Abscess record that they should start recording this October.

……………………………………………………………………

11:06 PM

Luxi:

Yes, I know. Sadistic Intent never recorded a full lenght, but still managed to create lots of fuss around them by sounding so dark, heavy and twisted death metal band back in the day. And they are still doing the same thing even nowadays. Much respect toward them!

……………………………………………………………………

11:06 PM

Enrique:

Ha-ha! Exactly! And to you, too!

……………………………………………………………………

11:06 PM

Enrique:

Here I am conversating with you. A person who has interviewed well known acts and yet you somehow find it interesting enough to want to publish something with an ex-Sadistic Intent band member who left the band back in 1991.

……………………………………………………………………

11:08 PM

Luxi:

Thanks buddy! To be honest with you, I rather talk with guys who were there back in the day because they know precisely what kind of backround they came from exactly. Sharing the same spirit of music era is always very important to me. And to be honest with you I think I have got a pretty good clue about the musical era/background where you come from, Enrique. ;o)

……………………………………………………………………

11:10 PM

Enrique:

I was just recently talking to a buddy of mine who has no clue about metal music. He asked me what got you into that life style?

……………………………………………………………………

11:10 PM

Luxi:

Ha-ha…!! :oD That is kinda amusing. Once a metal head – always a metal head.

……………………………………………………………………

11:11 PM

Enrique:

I started to talk to him and it ended up being an hour conversation and he was just amazed of the world I came from. Ha-ha! Yeah this is cool!

……………………………………………………………………

11:11 PM

Luxi:

Oh well, his loss actually…

SadisticMorbid.jpg
Sadistic Intent & Morbid Angel at the backstage in West Palm Beach Florida in 1990

……………………………………………………………………

11:12 PM

Enrique:

Yeah, he’s a lot younger but he told me he wished he had at least witnessed it once.

……………………………………………………………………

11:12 PM

Luxi:

There you go. We can consider us kinda are privileged persons because we were there when everything started to happen.

……………………………………………………………………

11:13 PM

Enrique:

To all those out there who shared this non-internet, music sharing/tape trading… you know what I mean.

……………………………………………………………………

11:13 PM

Luxi:

Metal has changed a lot since those ´golden days´. Tape trading = Ah, those were the times…

……………………………………………………………………

11:14 PM

Enrique:

The last picture I took with the band is on Myspace with the fog and skull pictures. Have you seen it.

Luxi:

Yes, I have. It looks a very cool picture, btw.

Enrique:

Yeah, metal these days has changed and I wish it would have never changed but then it wouldn’t be as special to us who remember that ‘golden age’.

……………………………………………………………………

11:15 PM

Luxi:

Yes, that is true. Gladly, some of the younger generation of metal heads are now trying to copycat that sound of ´golden age´, some doing it better – some worse.

……………………………………………………………………

11:16 PM

Enrique:

I remember getting a letter from Ross of Immolation where he wrote I’m writing to you because my friend Chris Reifert of Autopsy recorded your demo on side B of the same tape I got from him.

……………………………………………………………………

11:17 PM

Luxi:

Wow, every metal head was like a true supportive metal brother to each other back then, just like Ross proved it so clearly to you many years ago… ;o)

……………………………………………………………………

11:18 PM

Enrique:

I also remember when we would hear the same stories from other bands, unknown at the time, Nihilist/Entombed, Unleashed, Nocturnus, Malevolent Creation, etc. Oh yeah, we were all a big band of metal brothers spread out through out the world!

……………………………………………………………………

11:19 PM

Luxi:

Oh man, I still have my original demos left from those times; demos from Nocturnus, Autopsy, Death, Nihilist, Dismember, Morbid Angel, etc. Never given, or sold them away to anyone, my true ´gems´ from those times.

Enrique:

Yeah, I still have a lot myself. I still have personal letters from Euronymous.

……………………………………………………………………

11:20 PM

Enrique:

I remember Martin van Drunen, Pete Sandoval, Morgoth, etc., supporting Sadistic Intent by wearing our t-shirt when they played.

……………………………………………………………………

11:20 PM

Luxi:

Wow, that´s really cool… :o)

……………………………………………………………………

11:21 PM

Luxi:

You do have some great memories to be cherished when being a part of that band, don´t you Enrique?

……………………………………………………………………

11:21 PM

Enrique:

Grave, Paradise Lost, At The Gates, Trey Azagthoth… Yeah man, I am proud of what we accomplished at that time. We were planting more seeds of what was to come… I was there. People like you were too!

……………………………………………………………………

11:23 PM

Luxi:

Ah, Euronymous… He used to be a penpal of mine too, and we also traded some tapes to each other. But here comes the odd part. We both were born on 15th of April 1968!! Can you believe it!!? I think that is kinda amazing coincidence!!

……………………………………………………………………

11:24 PM

Enrique:

Wow, that is a coincidence. I interviwed Mayhem for my last issue of the fanzine I was writing at the time called DEADLY DISTORTED NOIZE, but it was Hellhammer who answered all the questions.

……………………………………………………………………

11:25 PM

Luxi:

Well Enrique, it is getting late here already and I am pretty tired, so I think it´s time to thank you for this conversation and say good night to you.

……………………………………………………………………

11:26 PM

Enrique:

It’s ok. I’m tired from work too. I don’t have that easy lifestyle I once had.

……………………………………………………………………

11:26 PM

Luxi:

It was nice chatting with you Enrique. Hope to do it again, and with a better time. :o)

……………………………………………………………………

11:26 PM

Enrique:

I’m gonna look for those old pictures and send them to you. No problem. Stay metal!

……………………………………………………………………

11:27 PM

Luxi:

Ok, that is so nice of you. Thanks man!

……………………………………………………………………

11:27 PM

Enrique:

Good night, buddy!

Luxi:

Good night & TTYS!

*ATTENTION*

On August 15th, Rick Cortez – one of the original members of Sadistic Intent, contacted me via email after reading Enrique´s interview, and wanted to set a few things straight about what Enrique told in this chat with me that we were having together some weeks earlier.

"Thanks for letting me know about Enrique’s interview on Metal-Rules.com. By the way, thank you for having our back regarding what Enrique said about Possessed. I read it and I would like to set the record straight on a few things. I’ll go back to 1987 and take it from there. It’s true that in the beginning, we did a lot of backyard parties and for the several first appearances, Sadistic Intent was not very supported by the “scene” at the time.  In that era extreme metal was no longer as popular as it was like in 1985-1986. That was mainly due to bigger bands either changing styles or breaking up (i.e. Celtic Frost, Venom, Possessed, etc.). By 1988 the majority of the thrash metal heads in the Los Angeles area had gotten into the hardcore-punk style. I was friends with John Araya (Tom Araya’s younger brother) and the whole Slayer crew plus most of their fan base were totally into punk. Although they enjoyed Slayer, they really had an anti-metal attitude, which created it a negative vibe from the crowds. One of the few people who liked us in the beginning was Jesse Pintado of Terrorizer. We became friends and he used to ask me to book them on some backyard party gigs so I got them on a few shows and to give you an idea of how the music climate was back then, even Terrorizer (featuring future members of Morbid Angel and Napalm Death) did not get supported either. Concerning our experiences back then, Bay and I recall some people shouting Slayer during our set but we certainly do not recall ever hearing that “fake Possessed” comment, to be honest, that would actually be a compliment especially at that time! ha-hah!! The fact is, Possessed was no longer around and by then, there was not a whole lot of Possessed fans left. As far as our stage look in the early days, before we started wearing leather pants and bullet belts on stage, we used to come out with jeans along with spiked and studded leather jackets (at least for the first few songs since it got pretty hot, he-heh!!). I remember that being influenced by early Destruction, the leather jackets looked metal!! The crowds would talk shit to us for headbanging and you know what we did, we headbanged even more! That’s what actually inspired us to start putting on even more leather and spikes. We looked at it this way, they don’t like what we’re doing because it’s too metal, now we’re going to do it even more! Ha-hah!! By 1988 we were in contact with many friends around the world through the underground and we certainly had people who enjoyed Sadistic Intent there! Looking back, that really helped motivate me and I honestly didn’t give a shit what the crowds back at home thought about us! Although we enjoyed some of the more aggressive punk oriented stuff, we still enjoyed extreme metal and we went against the grain on our home turf! The truth is, for a while in the late 80’s and early 90’s, we were the only band in Los Angeles coming out with bullets belts, spikes and so forth. Concerning the spitting incident, that only happened one time and to be honest, although some people in the crowd were being assholes (they were gang members looking for trouble), Enrique did provoke them… In certain parts of the interview, (like everything I just elaborated on), Enrique didn’t really explain himself well. I think when people read his comments like “fake Slayer, fake Possessed” and people spitting at us, they probably picture metal heads hating us but like I just explained, that was not the situation. Last time we hung out with Enrique, he brought up those early times to me and basically what he said is that he was proud to be a part of Sadistic Intent, because we kept it metal when it was no longer was cool to do so. Two decades later, L.A. certainly has an extreme metal movement and we were there to help make it happen with the band, fanzine and ultimately with our record shop".

In this very email, he also revealed some news from Possessed´s new material:

"A while back Bay and I came out with a new song for Possessed and I’m extremely satisfied with it. We (Bay and I) also recently just started to come out with another song for Possessed. This new one already sounds killer as well. Jeff asked me to come out with blast beat songs for Possessed but as an oldschool Possessed fan myself, I’m gonna do my best to create within the realm of the original Possessed. Jeff wants the whole band to write new stuff,  I’m going to come out with what I can. Even though it’s not Sadistic Intent, I care about these songs and they have to live up to my expectations.

We finally got a new computer (a Mac, unfortunately we bought an expensive PC last time) and we recently recorded the new Possessed riffs! Bay played drums through a keyboard and I recorded through a rack effects processor. I’m not really pleased with the guitar tone but at least it’s a step forward. We still need to spend some more money on gear and with our current economy it not very easy. We’re determined, we’ll get it done. I know at first we’ll basically record practice demos and as we get more experience we’ll start to record again!"
