A Tribute To Stevie Wonder

2008, Boosweet Records

Rating: 3/5

Vernon Neilly and Friends give a fresh and soulful look at one of music’s finest artists: Stevie Wonder. A few of Wonder’s most popular mixed with some lesser known’s make for an interesting listen.

The first single off this tribute disc is “Superstition” done by Bill Hudson and featuring vocals by Carlos Zema. This version is allot more complex than Stevie’s original. The drums and guitar are very uup front and in your face so to speak with the double kicks and solos respectively. In places Carlos just lets it rip and he really belts out some wicked high notes. Another of the greats on here is the Wonder masterpiece “Sir Duke”. This rendition is very close to the original track just updated with a few little subtleties added into it. Vernon plays on “Isn’t She Lovely” adding a soulful and more relaxed vibe to the album after the previous couple of selections. The vast majority of the album is instrumental based and probably geared more toward a musician than the general public.

A few really great moments that stand out above the rest. The rest are enjoyable but their playback feature is limited.
