As I Lay Dying
Seeing their first three songs, I have to admit that this band from San Diego really does put on a good show. Constant activity is the key, and the band never stopped moving, especially singer Tim Lambesis and guitarist Nick Hipa. But since At The Gates were playing in a couple of hours on the same stage, I didn’t see the need to stay for rehashed Gothenburg guitar melodies. They’re very good live though, and possibly one of the better metalcore bands out there.

Overkill
Once in a rare while, you get to watch as living legends strut their stuff before your very eyes, and you feel privileged as hell. Such was the case as Overkill raced on stage to kick off some New York thrash mayhem. Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth, DD Verni and co. look fighting fit; small wonder, as they’ve kept going with barely a break in nearly 30 years. Hauling themselves through cancer and strokes, band rifts and record label bullshit, they’ve emerged with a great big FUCK YOU to all who have dared to stand in their way, the lord almighty included!
‘Thanx for Nothing’, ‘Rotten to the Core’, ‘Bastard Nation’ – the Wrecking Crew anthems just kept on coming. “Less bullshit more music!” yelled Blitz as he launched in ‘Skull and Bones’. Midway through, Blitz lost his shirt revealing a huge tattoo. “There’s lots of flags here, kinda like a world gathering”, remarked Blitz going into ‘Hello From The Gutter’.
More Noo Joy-zee wisdoms from the effervescent Blitz, “Separate the tourist from the purist, we are the Wrecking Crew!” as ‘Wrecking Crew’ kicked off. “Here’s to the old school! We don’t care what they say, FUCK YOU!” introduced the defiant ‘Fuck You’. “Is this fucking France? Come on!” Blitz leading the chant and raising two middle fingers to the doubters as the band played their last song of the night. They would go on to tear up Islington Academy in London the next day, but their time here tonight was done. They’ll be touring the UK again in October – another unmissable gig. Overkill may have done more for Anglo-American relations than any number of poncy, corrupt, self-congratulating politicians have achieved since the second world war, and may their middle fingers never wither in old age and dotage.
