The Loner: Nils Sings Neil

2008, Vision Music

Rating: 3/5

Most known for his spot as Springsteen’s guitarist in The E-Street Band along side of Little Steven Van Zant. Nils’ first professional music endeavor was playing piano and acoustic guitar on Neil Young’s AFTER THE GOLD RUSH back in 1970. With Neil’s very own Martin (which Neil passed onto him for recording the landmark album) Nils set out to pay homage to the man in true Neil fashion; an acoustic and a piano.

An interesting tribute to Neil that is musically close to Neil himself. The songs do not stray away from the originals too much. Nils kept it real and did a fantastic job on them. The old acoustic and the piano make for an enjoyable listen when you just want to chill. A few of Neil’s lesser known’s are included as well as the ever popular “Long May You Run”, “Like A Hurricane” and even “Wonderin’”. The latter is one of the disc’s highlights as Lofgren tones it down a notch as compared to Neil’s ‘Shocking Pinks’ version.

An interesting collection and tribute that is fitting in today’s society where covers albums seem to be the flavor of the month. This one is slightly different in that the artist focused on one artist and that is one in which he worked with.
