Everclear

The Vegas Years

2008, Capitol Records

Rating: 3/5

In today’s music world releasing an album of all cover songs is the ‘Thing to do’. Is it that bands are all paying homage to their influences or is allot of it contractual obligations and filler between actual original albums? For the most part the latter appears to take precedent.

What sets this collection of songs apart from the rest?

The diversity is what hits you first as most stick to one particular genre of influences or favorite songs if you will. Art and band have a mix of 70’s, 80’s and even old TV show theme songs to make this release a bit more unique. The songs themselves are a bit varied in that there is some folkiness in “This Land Is Your Land” to a rockin’ cover of the Thin Lizzy classic “The Boys Are Back In Town”. The distinct Everclear sound is evident in each and every track while the band retains the integrity of the original version.

An interesting and fun listen with a couple obscure tracks tossed into the mix for good measure.
