Gillan

The Glory Years

2008, UMGD/Fontana

Rating: 3.5/5

Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan fronted his own band for a short period in the early 80’s simply called Gillan. This 1981 captures the rawness, the energy and the talent that is Gillan.

This hour long concert shows Ian and band in top form. Musically it is flawless and what Rock is all about; crunchy and dirty guitars, pounding drums and an amazing voice. Hearing him belt out the old Elvis tune “Trouble” is a real treat. He keeps true to the original but just kicks it up a notch and makes it a bit more rockin’ but somehow loses some of the attitude that the King had.

An interesting disc of tunes and great performances. This could only be better if a couple of Purple hits were included.
