The Cult

Born Into This

2007, Roadrunner Records

Rating: 4/5

Astbury and Duffy make an almost return to the classic Cult sound that we all know and recognize. The 10 tracks that make up this album are similar in style to the CEREMONY era songs in that the heavy rock edge is gone and a new direction is hinted at. Now it is the new/old direction is gone and the heavier guitar oriented edge is seeping back into the music.

The album’s first single “Dirty Little Rockstar” is an upbeat and very catchy number. One of the better tracks on the disc. Astbury’s voice is back to where it once was. He seemed to have lost it for awhile there but now the distinct rasp and roughness is back in true form. The riff heavy rock is full on here as evidenced on tracks like “Illuminated” and “Sound of Destruction”. These are fist pumping rockers that will definitely be crowd favorites at shows as they blend in with some of the earlier tunes with ease.

Overall it is a good rocking disc with some great tunes. Worth checking out if you like the band.
