Action
S/t
2007, Frontiers Records/Zink Music
Rating: 3.5/5
This is a comeback album from a band that disappeared from the scene in the early ‘90s. They were only active for about 5 years before they sunk into oblivion, though bandleader David “Chip” Ramos and singer Jack Marques have worked separately producing and writing for other artists. They could never abandon Action completely; in 2006 Ramos had the idea to reunite the band and at the beginning of 2007 they landed a deal with Frontiers Records. The entire original line-up is featured on the comeback album, but they’ve had a little help from Mark Duane on the drums. Action plays heavy melodic rock with ‘80s melodic rock roots and featuring keyboards and edgy guitar riffs. This album sticks instantly with its strong vocals, recognizable hooks and catchy choruses. They’re in the same league as Boston and Journey.
When I first listened to the album I thought it was boring and very generic, but after a while I found myself liking it. The album has a certain happy feeling that’s hard to shake off. It’s contagious and even though it’s more melodic than what I normally listen to I really appreciate the album.
Singer Jack Marques’ voice is perfect for Action, especially since he’s backed up by solid rock musicians. Almost every one of the 11 songs is listenable and for the most part well-written, strong and memorable. On the negative side, the lyrics are about love and there are too many ballads; some heavier songs would’ve really benefitted the album.
I hope that Action can stand up to the current flood of albums in this genre. They’ve got something special and they’re definitely worth checking out.
