Are you ready for some Freddie?
< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
One of Rock’s best showmen ever is seen here with the band that made him famous: Queen. One of the most talented groups out of < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />
The film was first shown at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival under the title WE WILL ROCK YOU to much critical acclaim. The show starts out with a ripping fast version of “We Will Rock You” and the show goes on for over another hour. The only time the band slows down either bit is for the song “Love of My Life” which features May on an acoustic guitar. Just watching this performance you cannot help but realize why Freddie was labeled as one of the best front men to ever grace the stage. His crowd interaction is bar none and he can really work a crowd into a frenzy. His distinct voice comes through here like a shot in the night. The clarity in the mix will just blow you away as you hear him hit the highs. Not only was he regarded as a great showman but highly acclaimed as a vocalist as well. Add into the mix of Mercury’s distinct voice is that of Brian May’s distinct guitar tone and you have one hell of a combination that is not to be reckoned with. There are very few that can rank up there with Queen.
The onstage performance has Brian and Freddie moving around from one side to the other almost nonstop. Bassist John Deacon tends to stay relatively still but lets his presence known through his melodic rhythms. Drummer Roger Taylor is kind of trapped behind the kit but exhibits much enthusiasm as possible especially during his solo and when he takes over lead vocals on “I’m In Love With My Car”.
The 2nd disc in the set is the Live Aid performance from 85 at Wembley Stadium. The complete performance is here, all 6 songs plus the Mercury and May rendition of “Is This The World We Created” from later the evening. Filled out with bonus material like behind the scenes footage and rehearsals make this one must own releases of all time.
This collection is what fans have wanted. Released with much time and care into making sure it was done right. This sets an example of how it should be done and others should take note. A fantastic release of rock royality.
