The Birthday Massacre

Walking With Strangers

2007, Metropolis Records

Rating: 3/5

An original and eclectic loot of tunes from < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Canada’s own The Birthday Massacre. Formed in 2000 under the name Imagica they gained popularity and a strong fanbase around southern Ontario. Their blend of Rock, Goth and Electronic is unique and may not be for everyone.

Synth and electronic heavy songs interlaced with some great melodies and amazing vocals make this one of the years most noticed releases. Singer Chibi has a beautiful voice and is easily the bands strongpoint. She has a good range and carries the notes and melodies tremendously. Musically the guitar is pretty good but too buried in the mix and the drums sound programmed. While the songs are good the electronic ‘dance’ beats take away from them. If they toned down the synths and electronics a couple notches the disc would be much better off.

Overall its not a bad release if you enjoy these styles. More guitar and drums would add allot to the release but keep those amazing vocals and tone down the electronic beats and programming sounds.
