Rating: 3.0/5

< ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Zion is a project that revolves around the ex-Alias and Sheriff singer Freddy Curci. Curci chose to work with a full line-up and a lot of different songwriters like Jeff Paris, Marc Ribler, and Steve DeMarchi. Curci’s last solo album consisted of previously-unreleased material. This album is a new attempt at getting Curci back to the top again.< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

This self-titled album serves us a very tasty dish of well-played melodic rock/hard rock with great arrangements and structure. The material is varied and the main focus is on Curci’s magical lead vocals along with the guitar, piano, and organ. A few tracks worth mentioning are “All It Takes Is a Minute”, “How Much Longer Is Forever”, and “No Surprise”, all of which are melodic rock tracks. A few other highlights within the more melodic-hard-rock style are “Dangerous” and “Everybody’s Watching”.

The only negative thing regarding the album is the love theme, of which I’m not a huge fan; almost half of the material is about love. Sometimes the main part of the songs is a little too slow; a higher tempo wouldn’t have hurt. Then there’s the cover artwork, which ruins the whole Zion experience a little with its ugliness.

Curci doesn’t only sing. He plays most of the instruments and has also produced almost the entire album except for a few tracks produced with the demon producer Fabrizio V. Zee Grossi. Zion’s debut album is a great way of spending your money, even though I think it’s a little too melodic sometimes. Besides the minor negative things, it’s a great album with great production as well as an amazing lead vocalist.
