Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose

2006, Virgin/EMI

Rating: 3/5

The third installment of the BAT OUT OF HELL series of records asks the ever famous question: “How does it compare to the original?”. This is such a loaded question, and can be looked at in two ways. If you look at it as a follow up to the original it pales in comparison as very few releases can reach such status and be that timeless. If you look at it as a new record with similarities (as I have tried to do), then it is a decent rock record.

There are a couple of classic Meat songs here that are similar to the original and have that similar feel to them. The duet with Marion Raven on “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now”, is you typical Meatloaf duet. It just emits so much emotion and the vocals are just flawless. The song “Bad For Good” is a track that has a small bit of the classical style to it , but it starts out like a Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas tune. Once it gets to chorus, you hear the real Meat comes alive.

Living up to such high standards is not easy and it is extremely hard not to compare anything Meatloaf releases to BAT OUT OF HELL. This is a good record but just not up to snuff for what it is. If another band released it, you would say they made an amazing album but Meat has raised the bar that high it will take a lot to reach it. Deep down we expect another album like the first that we know we’ll never get.
