BRIAN SETZER UNLEASES “13” THIS WEEK COURTESY OF SURFDOG RECORDS

Brian Setzer has delivered a kick-ass, straight-up, guitar, bass and drums rock record featuring unbelievable playing and solid songwriting. Fans of his prior work will be blown away by the versatility he demonstrates on this, his 13th album of original material. All 13 tracks have a unique feel, from the southern-influenced “Drugs & Alcohol (Bullet Holes)” to the classic-rock / new-wave sounding “Rocket Cathedrals” and the almost-metal “Back Streets of Tokyo.” A highlight is the guest appearance by Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom on “Really Rockabilly.” In support of “13,” Brian will embark on a 5-week U.S. tour in November/December, and continue with a 12-week North American run in 2007. Brian has sold over 12 million records throughout his 25-year career and “1” is sure to continue the lucky streak.

BRIAN BYRNE TO JOIN INXS TOUR

Brian Byrne will open for INXS for a run of Canadian dates in November, performing around Ontario and in Byrne’s home province of Newfoundland.  Byrne released his debut solo album Tuesdays, Thursdays And If It Rains last spring and the second single and video “Oscar Thomas Finn (Wish You Well)” is currently at Much More Music.

Formally fronting rock band I Mother Earth, Byrne spent six years recording two albums and touring around the world, which resulted in a gold record. When IME went on hiatus, Byrne started exploring his rootsy inspirations in clubs around Toronto.  After securing a deal with Kindling Music with Warner distribution, Byrne recorded an album that works its way through varied moods and captures the many different sides of this prolific artist.

Byrne has always been recognized as one of this country’s finest live performers.  His solo performances and stage presence have been described as captivating, mesmerizing and introspective.  There is no doubt Byrne will captivate the coliseum size crowds on this INXS tour.

A beautiful old theatre and some 1000+ enthusiastic fans created great atmosphere for this event, which lasted about 2 hours (the band played a wide selection of songs from all of their releases since 1991 and some tracks from the latest one – “Paper Blood”) and was captured by 7 cameras.

TALISMAN
TALISMAN singer Jeff Scott Soto was very kind to provide us with insights on the lyrics and songwriting of the brand new album “7” to be released on October 20th on Frontiers Records. Enjoy the read !

Falling
Wrote this one about someone who is supposed to be there for you through thick & thin, like a marriage partner or a lover, but when the chips are down, they just leave you out to dry. This happened to me with someone I worked with in my career.

Nowhere Fast
This also was about someone I thought I could trust & just stabbed me in the back when I turned for a second. I try to write my lyrics in a way that could be adapted to several scenarios, most of them sound like boy/girl situations but they are mostly about other personal experiences, whether they’re mine or someone I know of.

Rhyme & Reason
This is the opposite of the 1st 2, it shows the love & trust of one to another can exist without rhyme or reason, just because…

End Of The Line
This is part 2 of ‘Falling’, this person had a very deep affect on me enough to make me want to write about them…I go to my grave on who its about though :)

The 1 I’m Living 4
I wrote this about the fantasy & idea of love at 1st sight…I got the idea from my son & his experiences with love & dating, as we get older, we realise the reality of relationships & just how much is necessary in successful ones but as youngsters, we dive straight in with the fantasy ‘it will last forever’.

On My Way
This one is about my dealings with record labels & how they insist you do things ‘they’re way’ instead of expressing creative control. It can also be about a controlling lover in a relationship…you choose which you like it to be about!

Forevermore
This I wrote about the 15 year anniversary of Freddie Mercury’s death. There are a few Queen title references in the song that make it obvious but it is my tribute to one of the greatest artist’s of pop music. RIP Freddie

Succumb To My Desire
I decided to get down & dirty with this one lyrically, it could be Colour My XTC Part II, especially in the talking section where I rip straight from the lyrics of the old tune.

Shed A Tear Goodbye
This song musically was written by Jamie, our drummer, who asked me to specifically write the lyrics about what he was recently going through in his personal life. Since we’ve all been there before & knowing his personal details, I knew exactly how to treat it…it’s about a relationship one takes for granted yet doesn’t see it coming when the other finally calls it quits. One of those ‘don’t know what you got till it’s gone’ songs.

Troubled Waters
This too is the result of 2 people finding less in common as the years go on. Very often people change like hair styles or fashion leaving relationships or even friendships doomed.

Back To The Feeling
This is about a time I recently went through where I was very close to finally giving up in the music biz. I started losing the incentive to continue & through some inspiring recent contacts & writing partners, found a new confidence to not only continue but to do so with a fervor that had no room for failure…seemed to work :)Source: www.frontiers.it

Body Count return with first new disc in over 10 years

Ice-T is back with a new record from Body Count, whose sound influenced a whole generation of rock/rap artists including Korn, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against The Machine and dozens of others.  The band’s self-titled debut in 1992 included the controversial track “Cop Killer” which was protested vehemently by conservatives, the religious right, the NRA, police activist groups and the FBI.

After losing three of Body Count’s original members and trying to record a new album throughout one tragedy after another, Ice and Ernie C reformed the band and recorded Murder 4 Hire, first release in nearly 10 years, out on metal label Escapi Music.  They have also released a live DVD shot at the Troubadour in LA.

“For me, honestly,” says Ice, “after something like that, you can either come to a dead stop or you can go on…It was make-or-break. The key essence of Body Count is it’s a band made up of friends. It’s not about going out and hiring the best drummer or the best guitarist. If we don’t know you, you can’t be in the band.”

Winger set to release new CD

Winger IV slated to hit the USA on November, 28th 2006. This will be the first WINGER album in 14 years and not what you will expect. “The new WINGER album” explains Kip, “starts where “Pull” left off and moves into new directions. It mixes some classic Hard Rock like VAN HALEN and early WINGER style, progressive and acoustic elements that may resemble GENESIS, MOTT THE HOOPLE or KING CRIMSON”. The album artwork is handled by Ethan Van Sciver – a renowned comic book artist and penciller who has contributed (among others) to Cyberfrog, New X-Men, The Flash: Iron Heights and Impulse. More news on WINGER to come closer to the release. WINGER will tour Europe this month of October and a full USA Tour in early 2007.

UK BASED NEIL LEYTON RELEASES THE BETRAYAL OF THE SELF

Neil leyton’s long awaited  third  solo album The Betrayal of the Self has arrived and early reviews suggest it was worth the wait.  The album features an array of Swedish special guests including the Hellacopters’ Nicke Anderson, and Dregen from Backyard Babies. Three songs are also co-writes with Rich Jones, founding member of the Black Halos.

The album is a raging testimonial to the many sides of Leyton, so extravagantly paraded on the critically acclaimed Midnight Sun album, distilled on Betrayal of the Self into three loosely arranged categories: the personal songs, the political commentary songs, and the rock n roll party songs.  The album was recorded in Stockholm, and features a Swedish backing unit that Leyton dubbed the Ghosts.

Lisbon-born producer, singer, songwriter, rock n’roll guitar player & indie label entrepreneur: Leyton became familiar with the stage while living in Canada in the 1990’s, where he fronted Toronto’s glam godfathers The Conscience Pilate, after starting out on bass with psychedelic art-rockers Passion’d Flower.  He launched his solo career in 1998 with the release of the critically acclaimed Secret Avenue album, throwing himself simultaneously into his music as well as running Fading Ways Music, his Canadian indie label. His second album, From the brighter side of her Midnight Sun, was released in the UK via the ChangesOne label in 2003 and in Canada via Scratch Distribution, harnessing critical acclaim throughout all of Fading Ways Music’s distributed territories.

In 2004 Leyton launched Fading Ways Music UK with business partner Ashlyn Eaton, embracing Creative Commons licenses, and endorsing file-sharing and cultural freedom while most of the music industry launched reactionary lawsuits against so-called “pirates”.

Toronto’s eye weekly described Leyton as an “art-rock anarchist” unleashing a “modernist manifesto” with his second album, the critically acclaimed From the Brighter Side of her Midnight Sun. The Betrayal of the Self ups the ante.  Leyton is currently on tour throughout Europe.

PILLAR’s THE RECKONING DEBUTS AT NO. 70 ON BILLBOARD’S TOP 200

IMPRESSIVE RANKING ON MULTIPLE SALES CHARTS AND CRITICAL ACCLAIM FROM KEY MEDIA COMBINE FOR NOTABLE FIRST WEEK
The “Days of The Reckoning” Tour Kicks Off Oct 26

Rock band Pillar debuts on sales charts this week with its fourth studio album The Reckoning (10/3) making an impressive impact on sales charts overall, this week, debuting at No. 70 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, with more than 14 thousand in sales its first week at retail.

On the Nielsen SoundScan charts, the band claimed an impressive No. 6 on the Hard Music Chart Overall; No. 3 Record Label Independent Current Album chart; No. 19 on the Alternative chart Overall and No. 47 on the Internet Album chart.

Impressive chart positions reflect acclaim given the band by media outlets including Hit Parader Magazine, All Access Music Magazine, AOL Music, Guitar World Magazine, CNN Radio Networks blogcritics.org, musictap.net, rockmymonkey.com and Metal Express Radio Networks while consumer support is evident in sales and well as rapid tour sell outs.

Andy Secher of Hit Parader Magazine, offers, “Throughout The Reckoning it is crystal clear that Pillar’s down-to earth approach (with a touch of celestial guidance thrown in for good measure), is just what the rock and roll doctor ordered. Such tracks as riff-powered ‘Everything’ and the skittery ‘Sometimes’ show a band that’s not afraid to take chances while brandishing their ‘pure-bred’ rock and roll convictions.”

Metal Express Radio Networks notes, “Pillar shows a truly successful heavy rock album can be made while still keeping it clean.  With an insightful and unsullied lyrical approach, The Reckoning confirms the band’s songwriting has reached full artistic stride … and the musical power burned into this album proves Pillar has indeed not forgotten how to ROCK!”

Additional reviews include blogcritics.org who notes, “[Pillar’s] The Reckoning is strong start to finish,” and rockmymonkey.com with, “Pillar has the right formula for staying power.”

With multiple adds at radio the band is readying for its eighth national headlining tour, the “days of THE RECKONING” tour, featuring Day of Fire, The Showdown and Decyfer Down.

Opening in Minneapolis on Oct. 26, the tour will visit more than 30 cities through mid-December.  Among those major markets are Chicago, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Phoenix and Seattle. Already, industry gatekeepers are billing this tour as the “loudest tour this fall.”

(A complete tour itinerary is available at www.pillarmusic.com)

Simultaneously released was the special edition of The Reckoning, comprising the new album and featuring a bonus DVD with more than three hours of footage. The video portion includes a 2006 performance, as well as song commentaries by Pillar, and a “how to” section in which the members explain their equipment, technical aspects of songs, and other helpful hints.

Since the band’s Award-winning 2001 debut Above, Flicker Records artist Pillar has seen unprecedented success in every aspect of its career. With seven No. 1 radio singles and twelve Top 5 hits to its credit, Pillar has earned an additional three Dove Awards, headlined seven national tours, performed for more than two million people, and been featured on the covers of Radio & Records, Rockline Magazine, CCM Magazine, 7ball Magazine, Breakaway Magazine, HM Magazine, and Christian Retailing. The band has also received print coverage in Rolling Stone, Spin, Bass Player, and Hit Parader.

Pillar’s video “Bring Me Down” saw heavy rotation on the Fuse TV program “Rockzilla” and was voted No. 1 at Fuse TV’s “Oven Fresh.” The band additionally won Fuse TV’s Next Big Thing award. Most recently, Teen Mania tapped Pillar’s “Frontline” as the 18-month-long theme song for its “BattleCry” campaign with the organization filming an accompanying music video that aired at events in arenas nationwide. Pillar released its fourth studio project, The Reckoning, Oct. 3. The album’s first radio single, “Everything,” currently reigns at No. 2 on R &R’s Christian Rock chart.

Also, look for Pillar on the cover of HM Magazine’s November/December issue. For more information on Pillar, visit www.pillarmusic.com.

GLENN  GARINTHER HITS #1 ON CBC RADIO 3 WITH LOST TRACK

Indie artist Glenn Garinther has been named the #1 artist on Canada’s top 10 singer/songwriter’s on CBC Radio 3’s National countdown. The song has been sitting at #3 & 4 for the last few months and now holds the #1 spot for the last two weeks, above artists such as Matt Mays, Feist, and Ron Sexsmith; and if Elton John thinks Ron Sexsmith is someone to check out, you’ll definitely want to check out Glenn Garinther.

The interesting fact of the story is that the song sitting at #1 is not on any of Garinther’s albums, but a long lost live track.  Through a chance meeting with the Be Good Tanya’s in Vancouver, Garinther was invited to open for them at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre on January 10, 2003.  Someone recorded the set, made a disc of it, and set Garinther up with a site at New Music Canada.com.

“Much later, I was surfing the net one night and came across the track “One” (which was on that recording and only played that one time live ever) on the CBC countdown,” explains Garinther. “Because I’m broke, I don’t get to record a lot of the songs I write.  This is one of those songs that no one would have ever heard if it weren’t for those guys recording it that night.  So now, after this outcome, I’m feeling both extremely lucky, but more importantly, immense gratitude to the people that helped me out.”

The CBC Radio 3’s National countdown can be found at the New Music Canada website. It lists all the fresh, current, recently recorded music in Canada. They were established to support independent bands, underground DJs, and just-about-to-be-discovered artists in their own country. Glenn Garinther is one of those just-about-to-be-discovered artists, who has proved just how close to being discovered he is with his number one single.

At 35, Garinther has been writing songs for over 20 years as a form of personal journaling.  His debut album Post No Bills was released in 1997 followed by Immortal in 2001 and Totem in 2005.   This year he is working on his fourth release Nira.

The Revolting Cocks’ Phildo Owen Reveals New Project SNOW BLACK; First Shows Slated For Late October With Industrial Rock Legends KMFDM

The Revolting Cocks’ Phildo Owen announced today that he will be unveiling his new project SNOW BLACK in Texas this month on a string of dates alongside industrial rock pioneers KMFDM.

Joining him for the 5-date tour are bassist Paul Raven (Ministry/Killing Joke), guitarist SIN (Revolting Cocks) and drummer Mark Dufour (Skrew).

“It’s truly exciting to finally unleash the beast that is SNOW BLACK on the masses,” says Owen of the upcoming shows.

“SNOW BLACK is a chance for us to forget the bullshit & just get down and greasy while pounding out ass-shaking grooves!” comments Paul Raven, a veteran of the industrial scene best known for his time with industrial post-punk act KILLING JOKE as well as thrash/alt. metal act PRONG and, most recently, MINISTRY.

“I can’t wait to get out there and terrorize Texas with my very good friends and partners in crime Phildo, Raven and Mark!” adds Revolting Cocks guitarist SIN.

SNOW BLACK is Owen’s latest project since his return from this summer’s 60-date North American MasterBaTour 2006 (featuring Ministry & The Revolting Cocks).  He has since been in the studio putting the finishing touches on SNOW BLACK’s debut album entitled The Suggestion of Power.

Set for early 2007 release, The Suggestion of Power is a collection of 9 blistering industrial tracks layered with killer samples and Owen’s trademark raw, gritty vocals; an electronic assault on the senses, the message is simple, yet urgent- it is Owen at his finest, weaving a dark and brooding lyrical web of tongue-in-cheek idioms to reflect the socio-political complexities permeating American culture.

The album, produced by Owen, also features a contribution from industrial mastermind Buck Satan (Al Jourgensen) on the first single ‘Stick It In’; the two first collaborated in 1990 when Owen lent his vocals to the title track of RevCo’s raucous Beers, Steers & Queers album.

HOURCAST TO TOUR WITH GODSMACK AND BREAKING BENJAMIN, BEGINNING OCTOBER 20th AND RUNNING THROUGH NOVEMBER 21st

In perhaps the ultimate example of ‘taking care of your own,’ rockers Godsmack will be taking out fellow Boston, Massachusetts residents HourCast, on a month’s worth of arena dates.

Touring in support of their just-released debut full length, ‘State of Disgrace,’ the group – which is comprised of Patrick McBride: vocals, David Henriquez: guitars, David Sullivan: bass, and Jerry Clews: drums – should have no problem gaining a legion of new fans with their tough, industrial metal sound.

“I think I’m speaking for all of us when I say that we are honored to be keeping such company on this tour,” explains frontman McBride. “Godsmack wrote the book on how a band can bust their ass and make it happen. When you speak about legendary east coast hard rock…it’s Aerosmith and Godsmack. Period.  And Breaking Benjamin? Their songs have been ringing in my head for the last two years…great band, great songwriters. We are ecstatic to have this opportunity to play in front of these bands and it is our intention to kill it each and every night, and inspire their fans with our music…the way they inspired us.”

Released via the Alkamedia label, ‘State of Disgrace’ is fast establishing HourCast as one of the most-talked about new metal bands to hit the scene, as their video for the track “Freeze” is already creating a buzz on video outlets coast to coast.

Also, HourCast’s song “Sakarra” from ‘State of Disgrace’ has been added to the soundtrack for the latest installment in the SAW movie series…SAW III.

“All of us in HourCast are really pleased to have our music featured on the SAW III Soundtrack. We loved the first movie and the sequel. I think our music is a perfect fit to the vision of this movie” states Patrick McBride.

The movie and the soundtrack will be released THIS HALLOWEEN.

Eagle Rock Entertainment Presents Critically-Acclaimed CLASSIC ALBUMS Series;
First Six Titles Released This Week From U2, The Who, Phil Collins, Steely Dan, Bob Marley & Meat Loaf

Eagle Rock Entertainment-through its wholly-owned Eagle Vision subsidiary-is proud to announce this week’s release of the first 6 titles from its critically-acclaimed CLASSIC ALBUMS series.  CLASSIC ALBUMS is an unmatched source for the true and remarkable stories behind the creation and making of the greatest albums in modern music history.  All CLASSIC ALBUMS titles are fully authorized and feature exclusive interviews with band members and producers; as well, the series offers a multitude of behind-the-scenes footage, capturing rare and never-before-seen glimpses into some of the most seminal artists to ever grace the musical landscape of the 20th century.

The six masterworks are Steely Dan’s Aja, The Who’s Who’s Next, U2’s The Joshua Tree, Phil Collins’ Face Value, Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Catch A Fire and Meat Loaf’s Bat Out Of Hell.

Aja, the 1977 jazz-rock masterpiece from Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, with its staggering lineup of instrumentalists and singers, including Michael McDonald, the late Ian Dury, Chuck Rainey, Dean Parks, Larry Carlton, Rick Moretta and Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, is the best-selling album of Steely Dan’s career. Over a year in the making, it  took its toll on its participants. The anecdotes retold by the musicians themselves are priceless, considering the well-known fact that Fagen and Becker are two of the most fastidious perfectionists who ever stalked a studio.

What could be more classic than The Who’s Who’s Next? Every cut on this 1971 #1 chart-topper is classic, and remaining on the charts for five straight months. Surviving Who members Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle reminisce about the album’s relation to its era, and the circumstances that led to its recording. Also, those who were there and close to the group at the time weigh in with fascinating personal anecdotes, including stories about larger-than-life drummer Keith Moon. There’s hardly-ever-seen concert footage of the early days, and the symmetry behind such songs as “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Baba O’Riley” and “Behind Blue Eyes” is dissected and explored.

Has any album of the 1980s had a bigger impact upon its constituents than U2’s The Joshua Tree? Besides being the fastest-selling album in British chart history, logging 58 straight weeks on the American charts and garnering a Grammy for 1987’s Album Of The Year, its residual effects can still be heard 19 years later in everything even remotely associated with the word “alternative” within pop culture. Bono, The Edge, Larry Clayton and Adam Mullen, as well as longtime manager Paul McGuinness, U2 fan Elvis Costello and producers Steve Lillywhite, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois weigh in with their recollection, offset by dramatic concert footage.

Rare home movies, and previously unseen performances of Phil Collins working with producer Hugh Padgham and the Earth, Wind & Fire horn section punctuate this look at Face Value, the 1981 album that launched the former Genesis drummer’s solo career. Tracks are deconstructed to show the work that went into the final mix, including an illuminating remembrance of Eric Clapton’s work on “The Roof Is Leaking.” Plus, Collins exclusively opens his private archive of materials, and performs songs left off the final sequencing mix of the album.

Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer were, without a doubt, the most influential group in the history of reggae. The 1973 Wailers debut, released stateside on Island, gave the group international recognition and acclaim. The story behind the release is as fascinating and complex as the music itself, including a new interview with Wailer as well as an acoustic performance. His insight into how he, Tosh and Marley worked to make this release a surefire “crossover” is juxtaposed with rare archival footage and input, both musical and conversational, with wife Rita Marley and bassist Robbie Shakespeare. Also included are previously unseen concert footage and home movies.

With Bat Out Of Hell III on the horizon, this look behind the original 30-million seller is more timely than ever. Released in the year of the punk explosion of 1977, the record bucked all the odds in its over-the-top theatrical glory. Here, the story is told by Meat himself with composer Jim Steinman, producer Todd Rundgren and singers Ellen Foley and Karla DeVito. Complete with concert footage, the story is compelling and unique.
