Shut Up and Drive
2006, Pacific Music
The initial impression of this disc is “It’s good but it’s been done before”. Now before you immediatly dis this release you need to give it a few spins to let it really sink in and once you do you’ll be glad you did.
The first single is a cover of Skid Row’s “18 & Life”. It is very interesting to hear this song being done with female vocals where we are so used to having Bas’s voice etched into our brains. Dawn adds a bit of a different feel to the song while still maintaining the foundation of the original. Her vocal delivery is not as strong as Bach’s but she does hold her own.
Rounding out the remainder of the disc are a dozen hard rocking originals that put you in mind of early Joan Jett but with a slight bit more attitude. It is quite similar to the last ‘Real’ Veruca Salt album. These originals are well written and will come across very well in a live setting where the raw energy can be felt.
