British Sea Power
Open Season

2005, Rough Trade Records
Rating: 3.5/5

British Sea Power are a pop-rock band in the vein of  80’s era Bowie. Even the vocals sound similar in a few places. This five piece unit have been making waves in the UK for the past couple of years and are now about to do so on this side of the pond.

With this; Their 2nd release they are creating quite the buzz with energetic live shows and good time music. The songs on this sophomore release are very reminiscent of some of the new wave stuff that came out of the UK back in the 80’s. There are subtle hints of Joy Division in places and the Bowie comparison is obvious, especially in the vocals. “It Ended On An Oily Stage” & “Please Stand Up” are two great upbeat rockers that are really catchy with Yan’s vocal and the catchy rhythm. Whereas a song like “To Get To Sleep” will put you in the mind of early U2. Even the guitar has Edge-like riffs in places.
While not overly original it is still well worth a listen, especially if you are a fan of Brit Pop of yesteryear.
