MEMORY GARDEN
One of Sweden’s Best Kept Secrets

Interviewed on September 11, 1997 by EvilG

Metal Rules!!:
Ok guys, first thanks for your time to answer these questions for Metal Rules!! What member of the band do I have the pleasure of interviewing?

Anders:
Hello, here is the answers to your interview with MEMORY GARDEN. We are very sorry for the delay. The interview is answered by guitarist ANDERS LOOSTR?M.

Metal Rules!!:
Tell me the background on your band, how long you’ve been together, how you formed the band, etc…

Anders:
Memory Garden was formed Dec. 1992 by singer Stefan & bass player Ken. Steve played in a band called Taste but he wanted to do something heavier so he asked Ken to join his new act and then the wheels started rolling. Because Ken has a smaller brother who played in another band they stole Tom and the guitarist Nico, Me (Anders), was the last one in of the original members (to join).

Metal Rules!!:
What does the name “Memory Garden” mean and where did you get it from? I believe its a song title by Trouble, I assume you never got it from them? The name doesn’t really sound like the name of a metal band, was this deliberate?

Anders:
(Memory Garden) is the place on the cemetery where the stray the ashes of dead people lie.

You hit your head on the nail on that one. It is a song of Trouble and we did get it from that particular song. You see, at the time when I joined The Garden they didn’t have a band name. So Steve and I where out driving in my car and that song came out of the stereo, so we just looked at each other and we knew we had the name right there.

Metal Rules!!:
How would you describe your music? I find it to be uniquely melodic with a depressing quality created by the slow tempo of allot of the songs. Would you agree? Is there a reason why the majority of the songs are of a slower tempo and not faster?

Anders:
Well, it is hard to tell from our point of view. But our songs are made in a style that’s in our mind, a mix of a huge blend of music and slow seems natural to the lyrics and stuff, so there you have it.

Metal Rules!!:
What bands or styles of music have influenced the band? The obvious comparison for me would be to say that Memory Garden are somewhat like a more doom laden version of Morgana Lefay. Do you mind that comparison?

Anders:
To be compared with Morgana LeFay is an honour because they are a very good and talented band. But in musical style the five of us are very different in style. It cover(s) mostly everything from Enya to Black Flag. So we steal a little bit here and there.

Metal Rules!!:
Why do you think Sweden has produced so many great metal bands?

Anders:
To be honest, I haven’t the foggiest…

Metal Rules!!:
How do you see the popularity of metal in Sweden and in Europe in general? How do you see metal’s popularity in comparison to metal’s popularity in North America?

Anders:
Well the impression I get is that a little bit of the huge groups from the 80`s has come back. I think that Metal is bigger in Europe than in the US of A, the thing in The States I think is hit-lists and sort of college-rock.

Metal Rules!!:
Do you hope to crack the North American market? I know that your CD’s are available over in Europe and according to your press release in South America. Why nothing for Canada or for USA? Is it hard to make any headway over here? Or are you perhaps content with or focused on Europe?

Anders:
It would be cool if we made it somewhere, but we haven’t focused on anything like that. I think that our kind of music is a bit to narrow to hit big time.

Metal Rules!!:
Are you touring at the moment? If so where and with who? If not then are there any tour plans for the near future? Are there any bands you’d like to be touring with?

Anders:
NO. We might hit the road this autumn but nothing is certified yet. We hope, hope and hope that something will work out this time. Fave bands would be: Memento Mori, Morgana LeFay, because our music is pretty similar.

Metal Rules!!:
How has your latest release “Tides” been doing sales wise? How about in terms of radio air play?

Anders:
It has been selling very good I think. For being the first full-length album from a small band on a small label. Air play, I don’t really know at all.

Metal Rules!!:
What inspired the lyrics you’ve written? Do you like writing about historical things like in the song “Trapped At The Pharaohs” which is one of my favorite songs on “Tides”?

Anders:
Oh, that is a tough one. You see, I write about almost everything that’s a little weird and stuff like that, but happens in our ordinary life. Then we have this little thing called earth that soon will be dead. Unless we don’t do something about the whole situation soon. It’s fun though to see that you enjoy “Trapped..”, it’s a bizarre true story about an English archeologist who got lost inside the pyramids. People tried to help him because they could communicate with him through the walls, but they never found him.

Metal Rules!!:
Why is there no official Internet home page for Memory Garden? Do you not think that the Internet is a good place to advertise your band globally?

Anders:
Yeah, why don’t we have a homepage. There’s without a doubt the best way to get in touch with different countries and people who is into the music bizz, we just have to see what happens later this year?

Metal Rules!!:
Will you be or have you made any music videos from “Tides”?

Anders:
No, there are no music videos available from “Tides”, and I don’t think there will be any one made either, maybe we will do one for the next album.

Metal Rules!!:
What are your immediate and long term goals for the band?

Anders:
To be able to get on the road, playing a lot, release another album and perhaps sell a few records too.

Metal Rules!!:
Why was the EP “Forever” released separately from “Tides”? Are there any plans to release the two together on the same CD?

Anders:
“Forever” was released separately from “Tides” because we didn’t know at the time there would be any “Tides” album! Although we had a few more tunes then, the four ones who ended up on the MCD. We have a little thing going on in South America, Hellion Records will release them on the same CD on license. It’s out now, I think!!

Metal Rules!!:
Have you written any new material since the release of “Tides”? Is it in the same vein of music or have you been experimenting or moving in another direction?

Anders:
Yes, at the moment we have three songs that are finished. The songs goes in the same vein as earlier (material), perhaps more technical and a little bit heavier/dirtier.

Metal Rules!!:
Well that’s all the questions I have. If you’d like too add anything about Memory Garden…now is the time. Thanks, and good luck to all of you.

Anders:
Last words – Believe In What U Are Doing!!
