INSULT II INJURY
Interviewed Jan. 1996 by EvilG

This time around I’ve had the pleasure to interview bassist Brian M., from the up and coming New York band Insult II Injury. A new supportive label and a bit of luck will make these guys as common a name to you as Biohazard or Flotsam & Jetsam.

Metal Rules!!:
First Brian, let me say thanks for taking the time 2 do this e-mail interview with me!! Could you give me a bit of background info on the band for those who have not YET heard of you. (Such as how the band came together, what your goals are, etc…)

Insult II Injury:
Insult II Injury is – James Gibbons/vocals, Kenny Braun/drums, Brian M./bass, Kurt Remmpel & Steve S. on guitars. We formed spring of ’92 in Queens, New York. We all had been in a lot of bands and wanted to stop fucking around and get signed.

MR:
I have a 2-song sampler by you that came out in 1994 containing “Peaceful Solutions” and “Netherworld.” Will these songs show up on a future Insult II Injury recording?

I II I:
The 2-song sampler was before we got signed and actually led to us getting a deal, but most likely these songs won’t be on any future albums. They may end up as B-sides on CD singles you never know.

MR:
Tell me how your deal with Century Media came about, and the subsequent recording of “Point of This” with co-producer Bobby Gustafson (former Overkill guitarist).

I II I:
We sent Century Media the 2-song sampler and they were into it. The head man came to hear the rest of our songs in Queens where we practice, He seemed to like what he heard. We started recording the album with Bobby G. about 3 months after that Bobby G. (ex-Overkill) just happened to be friends with us and also fit our budget so he co-produced the album.

MR:
Where any videos made from “Point of This”? (Up here in Canada we’ve seen none).

I II I:
No unfortunately we were not given the chance to do a video – No support from Century Media.

MR:
Now that your album has been out for just over a year, how has it done? Do you think it made the impression you desired?

I II I:
The hopes we had were a lot higher than what went down with the album and our ex-record company. When your record company goes against you it’s very hard, like no-tour support and no videos to expose your band to the public. We still managed to push about 10,000 albums and did a lot of shows on our own.

MR:
Do you consider your outlook of the world’s future to be a dark one? What is “the point of all of this”??? Have you found “a reason to exist”‘? :-)

I II I:
Our outlook on the world on P. O. T. is just one possible scenario- The world is made up of people like you and me, and everyday you have a choice to do something GOOD or BAD.

MR:
Where and with whom did you tour with for “Point of This”?

I II I:
Like I said Century Media flaked out!!!! but we did a lot of shows on our own with—-PRO-PAIN, BIOHAZARD, M.O.D. and HEADLOCK.

MR:
Are you writing material for a new CD? If so do you have any idea when we can expect new material, and is it in the same style?

I II I:
We are writing a lot of new material it might be out on a new label by spring who knows? As for the style It’s sort of evolved -still heavy as fuck but just better and more interesting.

MR:
Do you consider yourself a ‘metal’ band? Or do you think that the term ‘metal’ is too limiting?

I II I:
I can’t really label what we are but most people would probably use the term “metal” at one point or another to classify us.

MR:
Are there any new bands out that you think really kick ass?

I II I:
Sure I like DOWN(even though they are all from other bands),KORN Monster Voodoo Machine , Machine Head.

MR:
Tell me what you think about the latest trend to look down upon metal… Would you agree that the REAL metal bands are those that are sticking it out through this slump? (if you even agree with that…?)

I II I:
I think heavy music is doing fine like- White Zombie, Pantera, C. O. C. Korn and Biohazard. You just can’t give up and most important -Don’t all ways listen to what people say ,because it might be all BULLSHIT!!!

MR:
Tell me what makes Insult II Injury a band worth checking out? What puts you above the rest of the pack of new metal contenders? (I have my reasons for thinking that you can, and hopefully will, make a name for yourself on the international metal scene…I am just wondering what your thoughts are on this.)

I II I:
Well Insult II Injury is worth checking out because We put everything into our music and it overflows with energy and emotions- Plus if you believe in something hard enough it will work out for you just have faith!!

MR:
If you have anything else you would like to pass along to the metal masses let me know….L8er! And thanks BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

I II I:
Thanks for your interest in the band it makes it worth while —PEACE…….

MR:
Thanks Brian for allowing me to ask you these questions. I wish you the best of luck in finding a new deal and a label that will actively support you. I hope in some small way that this will inform at least a few people about your band. You deserve to be heard.
