Darrin Scott (ex-Belladonna) of the Spiderbabies
Interviewed on Sept. 20, 1998 by EvilG

Darrin Scott was the lead guitarist on Joey Belladonna’s (ex-Anthrax) self-titled CD. Darrin has since went on to form his own band – Spiderbabies.

Metal Rules!!:
Hey Darrin, thanks for contacting us at Metal Rules!! I’ve been wondering what ever happened to Belladonna and to Joey in particular. But before we get to that lets take it back to the beginning…

Darrin:
When I got into metal it was early 1980s. Cooper, Krokus, Maiden, Priest, etc. Kiss made me start playing guitar. Seeing them tear up a stage ruled. I knew what to do next. I had been playing since I was 7 but that just took the cake. When Randy Rhoads came on the scene, I really lost it. I started looking for people to play with. We sucked but it was a learning experience. Been history ever since…..

Metal Rules!!:
Since Priest was one of the early bands you liked, what do you think of Jugulator?

Darrin:
I love Priest. Jugulator was great but something was still missing to me. Rob’s 2 album was cool too but odd….

Metal Rules!!:
What band(s) were you with before Belladonna?

Darrin:
Bands before Joey: Local Syracuse, NY bands. We did the thruway circuit from Albany to Buffalo (Axiom and Hippie Jet). 6 months after Joey I had a band w/the drummer from the Bullet Boys (Robbie) -  Pain Inc. He ended up going back to them to do a tour. Pain Inc only did a demo…nothing exciting there.

Metal Rules!!:
Well like most that are reading this who have recognized your name, they remember you as the guitarist for Joey Belladonna’s solo project. How did you hook up with him?

Darrin:
Joey had another line-up before me. He was testing the waters w/a Berkley guitar guru by the name of Joe Stump. I saw them play out once locally and I slipped Joe a tape of me in case he ever needed a guitarist. He called me a long time later.

Metal Rules!!:
How long after you joined the band did the CD come out?

Darrin:
Joey and I had been together for 1 year almost before the album came out. He wanted to do it right and was being very cautious. It took so long to find the right type of people to play with. Even harder to find anyone who could/would still play Anthrax in our town.

Metal Rules!!:
Did you tour very much with Belladonna? With what bands?

Darrin:
Before the album came out we toured by ourselves to see if anyone cared. They did so the push to find a label was on.

Metal Rules!!:
From your point of view were you satisfied with the recording?

Darrin:
For the most part I was happy with the recording but I had the unmastered copy. The guitars were tons beefier before they mastered it. I heard the master and almost cried. It sounded thin like razor blades on glass (talking about my sound). I have a low end that shakes the house. It wasn’t there at all. Joey and Alex told me they were trying to get a full well-rounded sound. That’s cool. No problem. It didn’t bother me until people said my sound sucked. I told them to come to a show and stand in front of my cabinet. If their pants didn’t move from the sound–they were right. Anyway no one knew me from anything and it was Joey’s album so I didn’t care as long as he was happy.

Metal Rules!!:
Did the fact that this CD was primarily released under the shadow of Joey’s former band -  Anthrax, help or hinder you?

Darrin:
Being released under Joe’s name was good and bad. Good to get hype and promotion but bad when people expected an Anthrax clone. Joey was into showing people that he could really sing instead of screaming all the time. Good for him. He’s got an awesome voice ya know.

Metal Rules!!:
Before hearing the CD I had assumed (from rumors) that Joey was not into metal anymore and that this CD would be a rock album. However, when I heard it, it was very 90′s falling somewhere in the Pantera/Fight vein of things… Would you agree with those comparisons?

Darrin:
The rumors that Joey wasn’t into Metal were wrong. He was into everything fro Jazz to Classic Rock to Metal. What scared people was when he said he loved Journey. He said that during Anthrax too…what’s the difference now? Our album was in the Fight/Pantara vein so how could they say this? The next album was going to be killer. VERY HEAVY!!!

Metal Rules!!:
So lets move it ahead a bit…the Belladonna CD is out and the tour is over…what was happening? You mentioned to me earlier that you had co-written a shitload of new songs with Joey for I assume a new Belladonna CD. Tell me about this writing process and what the songs were sounding like.

Darrin:
I helped Joey record and mix the new songs. There was 30 or so. He had this killer home studio that was just like a real one. The quality was awesome. The songs had more bite and ripped your face off. It was never released because Mausoleum went under to my knowledge. It’s possible that we all got upset having to look for a new label and things just got out of hand. Nobody wanted to do anything but mope. Such a complete shame.

As for Joey’s plans now…who knows. He’s a hard man to get a hold of. Even if you know his number. I know he and his woman breed and train show horses. Great cash in that. I wish him well.

Belladonna member update:

Joey – relaxing enjoying life
Scott the drummer – M.I.A.
Joe Andrews the bassist – picking up chicks and quit playing
Darin Scott – New band Spiderbabys

Metal Rules!!:
Ok, onto your new band – Spiderbabies. How long did you sit around before you decided it was time to move on with a new band?

Darrin:
Spiderbabys. This band was formed from Pain Inc. (the band w/Robbie from the Bullet Boys and me). We are currently playing in Syracuse, NY to get funds to finish a full CD. We will then sell it and market it to more labels. The band’s sound is kinda a cross between 80s metal and zombie minus the the dance type beats. Just heavy. When I heard the tape in my car, I found myself speeding. Does that tell you what it’s like? Very soon we will have a website. I can’t wait. You will know first.

Metal Rules!!:
Thanks Darrin…looking forward to checking out your new band Spiderbabies…talk to you soon.

Darrin:
I hope this helped a bit. If you need more info, I’ll be glad to tell all…..Thanks!!
