DEAD BY WEDNESDAY from USA releases New EP “Death of the Rockstar” & video for single “When in Rome”

September 1st, 2014
by Celtic Bob

Dead By Wednesday’s fourth release, ‘Death of the Rockstar’, is a powerhouse 5-song EP out on EarOne Productions. It’s in one sense the death of one long chapter of the band’s history due to the loss of long-time guitarist Ross Ragusa (who is still playing on this CD), but is also the rebirth of a hardworking, independent metal band that has morphed into a “real” unstoppable international act with the addition of touring guitarist Joey Concepcion (who also plays in Armageddon featuring former member Chris Amott of Arch Enemy). Along with band veterans Opus (drums), Mike Modeste (bass), and Joe Morbidelli (vocals), these guys are a tight unit live and in the studio, a band that can be put up on the same stages with any of the top metal contenders “of the now”, finishing a full direct support tour to Shadows Fall. ‘The Death of the Rockstar’ is also a metaphor for the dying music industry of today. This is not in regards to the art or creation of music by our fellow musicians, but rather the negative impact that the corporate politics involved has had on the current scene.

The German blackened death metal outfit BLEEDING RED is currently working on the follow up to their debut album “Evolution’s Crown” from 2012.

After long wrangling the band was finally able to get to an agreement with their former record company and start with the songwriting for the new, yet untitled album.

Vocalist and guitar player Timo states:

“It’s done! After a long and sapping struggle we have managed to exempt from our previous record company and are finally ready to go about a new album! We’ve got a couple of songs done in their basics and are already excited about what this new era will bring!” Read the rest of this entry »

Alberto Rigoni: Overloaded video teaser and the concept behind the new album

August 29th, 2014
by EvilG

After the release of “Three Wise Monkeys” album which featured amazing contributions from legendary musicians such as KevinMoore (ex-Dream Theater), Göran Edman (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Italian bassist and prog rock composer Alberto Rigoni is now going to release his fourth album entitled “Overloaded” (October 1st 2014).

More heavy and progressive than its predecessors, the new album, fully instrumental, is inspired by Alberto’s vision of our contemporary society. “I think that everything is going too fast today and one of the reasons is technology: hyper fast communications (mostly through social networks), multitasking activities, tons of information as well as misinformation, products, services… In a couple of words – we are OVERLOADED! The Internet has changed our lives, and even though it is indeed a great tool we have to be careful and use it judiciously. Excessive use may cause several diseases such as stress, depression, and social isolation.” explains Alberto.

At the following link you can watch the Overloaded video teaser directed by Gustavo Arteaga: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpGPShm_GCY

LPRHC FEST – Lappeenranta, Finland

LPRHC FEST

  August 1 – 2, 2014

Review by Petri da Costa

Although Finland is mainly known outside for its heavy metal bands and for the heavy and rock summer festivals, there’s a great hardcore scene with many bands and gigs around the year. This year it was the sixth time the LPRHC Fest was organized, a fest which started back in 2006 very small and grew over the years. This time around there was a new location for the festival, more bands than the previous edition, a lot of expectations and some bumps along the weekend.

FRIDAY

The first day of the fest started sort of early, around 16.30, and since I was only able to leave to festival in the afternoon, from Helsinki, I wasn’t able to catch the first acts of the day, which included a good combination of hardcore and punk bands like Become a Threat, Ydinperhe, No Shame, Kaupungin Valot, One Hidden Frame, Foreseen and Kivesveto Go-Go

Once inside the festival area the mood was great and although it seemed far from being full, there was a good number of fans and I was able to watch the end of Räjäyttäjät, a punk band in the second stage. Next up was supposed to be Misery Index’s turn (which substituted Ringworm after they canceled their gig in the fest), but the organizers changed the schedule and left Notkea Rotta Allstars to take on the main stage. During their near 60min. set they certainly pleased the crowd and kept the good vibe of the festival going.

notkea+rotta+allstars

notkea+rotta+allstars3 notkea+rotta+allstars2

The last band of the second stage was Laineen Kasperi ja Palava Kaupunki, the second hip hop act of the day, which continued the good “party” vibe from Notkea Rotta Allstars. At the same time, in the bar area, singer Joey Luumäki was doing a short “acoustic” set, but it didn’t seem to get that much attention. It seemed a bit odd to have at the same time two different performances, and not so far away from each other, so the sound wasn’t that great throughout both perfomances, this was a problem that was even more noticable on the next day.

So it was finally Misery Index’s turn to close the first day of the festival. Promoting their lastest release, The Killing Gods, the band was as usual on top form with songs like “Conjuring the Cull”, “Manufacturing Greed” and “Traitors”, which closed their set, displaying their powerful death and grindcore sound. It was however a bit strange to notice that towards the mid of their set some people leaving the festival area. Well, those who witnessed them during the entire 60min. set left extremely satisfied and wanting for more.

 SATURDAY

The second day of the festival seemed promising, after all H2O was finally going to play for the first time in Finland and many people were coming to the festival just to see them. Unfortunately around 14o’clock word came out that the band had missed their flight to Finland and wouldn’t be able to come to the festival. This sent a shockwave of disappointment and frustration for most, especially those who were coming from far just to seem them. The organizers then had to come with a substitute for them, which would be Pää Kii, a “new” punk band who has been getting a lot of fans over the last two years. There was nothing else to do but try to enjoy the festival, even though during the whole day there was still a certain bitterness over the very late cancellation of H2O.

On the previous day there was a good combination of hardcore and punk bands, plus the hip hop bands, but Saturday seemed like it was the “punk day”. From Relentless to Rejected to The Heartburns to Anal Thunder to Terveet Kädet and many more, the punk overtook the festival and many were wondering why there weren’t more hardcore bands on the schedule.

Rejected3 RejectedRejected2

Regardeless of that, the music was good and the fans were enjoying the last day of the festival. It was noticeable to see that there were less people than Friday, but the bands gave their best and kept the crowd entertained and if there’s one band that fits that description well is Ratface. Their hardcore/thrash/punk short set on the main stage got everybody moving in the circle pit and moshing. One problem that occurred was that when they were still playing, the band who would follow them on the second stage, Bloodlands, started to do a bit of sound check and since both stages were very near, you’d hear a sound mixture from both stages.

ratface2 ratface5 ratface22Bloodlands took on the second stage a bit after Ratface and kept the intensity of the previous circle pit with their hardcore and death metal approach. It has to be said that their drummer was the “MVP” of the day having played earlier drums for Rejected and then in Ratface and right after in Bloodlands, not many could have pulled that off! During Bloodlands, Joey Luumäki was again on vocals/guitar in the smaller stage of the beer area and the sound was too loud, once again causing sound problems for those who were in the second stage watching Bloodlands.

Bloodlands2Bloodlands3Bloodlands

One of the most famous punk bands from Finland, Terveet Kädet, showed that they still got a lot of energy unlenshing their old school punk and the fans kept that pit moving. Right after came Hammertime and was also one of the bands that had more fans in the pit. From beginning to end they showed that the Finnish hardcore is strong and alive. The day was coming to an end and Anal Thunder was the one which closed LPRHC Fest 2014 in a very humorous way pleasing the fans.

It wasn’t a perfect weekend, as mentioned there were some problems regarding the location and sound of the three different stages in the festival area. It’d have been also better to have more hardcore bands since after all the festival is called Lappeenranta Hardcore Fest, but I’m sure in the forthcoming editions of the festival these little bumps will be solved and the fans will come in greater numbers.

Legendary architects of thrash metal EXODUS have revealed the track listing for their upcoming tenth studio album, Blood In Blood Out, due out in North America on October 14th.

“When I was working on the record, I was sitting around watching TV series like ‘Gangland’ and all these locked-up prison reality shows,” shares guitarist & songwriter Gary Holt.  “And I thought, ‘Yeah, that’s like EXODUS.’  It’s a brotherhood.  You bleed to get in, you bleed to get out.  I’ve been doing this kind of music since I was a teenager and I’ll be doing it ‘til I can’t physically do it anymore.”

INSIDE METAL Film Being Made With Your Help

August 28th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

The early ’80s metal scene in Los Angeles has become legendary, as it spawned such worldwide headliners as Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Dokken, W.A.S.P., and originally, Metallica (before the latter relocated to San Francisco). And the new documentary, ‘Inside Metal: Pioneers of L.A. Hard Rock & Metal,’ chronicles the entire scene.

Directed by Bob Nalbandian and produced by Metalrock Films, ‘Inside Metal’ features all-new interviews with countless bands and artists that thrived on the scene, and tell its story, first hand. To ensure that this killer documentary receives the attention it deserves, a fundraising campaign has been set up at WWW.METALROCKFILMS.COM – which will help strengthen the film’s distribution, marketing and promotion.

This groundbreaking movie features exclusive and candid interviews with members of Metallica (Lars Ulrich), Ratt (Stephen Pearcy), Dokken (Don Dokken), Quiet Riot (Carlos Cavazo), W.A.S.P. (Chris Holmes), Megadeth (David Ellefson), Great White, (Jack Russel), Y&T, (Dave Meniketti), Stryper (Michael Sweet) and Armored Saint (Joey Vera).

‘Inside Metal’ is about giving fans the real inside story from the behind the scenes world of metal and hard rock with in-depth interviews, ultra-rare concert footage and photographs, and an original music score from that era; in this no-holds-barred, never before seen, recollection of untold stories.

To check out some sneak previews, visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlzWl795u0E

Early feedback has been exceptional, including renowned video director Jonas Åkerlund (who has worked with the likes of Metallica and Ozzy) raving, “This film captures an era that catapulted metal into the spotlight and takes the audience on a wild ride down memory lane. After watching it I wanted to get in my time machine and experience those days for the first time. You’re hit with a potent nostalgia, a time I thought we couldn’t get back, not until I saw this film. I can’t get enough of this shit, what an amazing film to watch over and over again, well done!”
Metalrock Films ask – and want – real and serious metal fans to be a part of this historic documentary and spread the word that this was the scene where it all began, ground zero.

“Our Fanbacked campaign will raise the direly needed financial support to bring this film to one and all in the US and Internationally in order to pay for the marketing and promotion to get it noticed by the general public. We want to bring this film to your theatre, town, bar, club and living room! Unite and support us. SAXON’s Biff Byford Fronts Film Concept Group, THE SCINTILLA PROJECT – New Album ‘The Hybrid’ Coming Next Week!

August 28th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

image001

“Scintilla”, a science fiction thriller, is set deep underground in the wilds of a former Soviet state where strange genetic experiments are taking place. A war weary mercenary is hired to lead a company scientist to the secret underground laboratory and with his team of mercenaries to steal the research in the laboratory. Along the way the good people face dangerous militia involved in a bloodthirsty civil war, strange monsters lurking in the abandoned tunnels of the old Soviet bunker and finally they meet the scientist running the genetic experiments and her terrifying secret.

The film has inspired a newly formed super-group THE SCINTILLA PROJECT, fronted by SAXON’s own BIFF BYFORD, who will be releasing their album The Hybrid in the U.S., featuring songs inspired by the film, on September 2, 2014 via UDR Music. Select tracks on the record are co-produced by world-famous heavy metal producer Andy Sneap, who also plays guitar on these tracks.

Biff Byford states, “I was introduced to Lionel Hicks by Toby Jepson while recording ‘Call To Arms’. This was leading SAXON to write a song for the Lionel Hicks produced film ‘Scintilla’. As the film developed through production, our minds began working – maybe we could put together a concept album based on and inspired by the film. While I was having a break from writing with SAXON, Lionel Hicks, Anthony Ritchie (both ‘Balance Of Power’), and I decided that I would produce and also sing on the album. I brought in Andy Sneap to co-produce and play guitar on some tracks.”

Tracklisting:

1.      Scintilla (One Black Heart)
2.      Beware The Children
3.      Permanence
4.      Some Nightmare
5.      Angels
6.      Pariah
7.      The Damned And Divine
8.      Life In Vain
9.      No Rest for The Wicked (SAXON recording as featured in the film – taken from ‘Call To Arms’)

Lionel Hicks (drums)
Anthony Ritchie (bass)
Andy Sneap (guitar)

Belphegor – Interview With Helmuth

Interview With Helmuth

By Peter Atkinson

Photos from https://www.facebook.com/belphegor

It takes a tough son of a bitch to survive for more than two decades in the extreme metal underground. And Helmuth Lehner – or just Helmuth, if you please – is a tough son of a bitch to be sure. As frontman, guitarist and driving force behind Austria’s self-described “diabolical death musick” deviants Belphegor, he’s kept the band going through myriad lineup changes, injuries that prompted the departures of bassist Barth in 2006 and co-founding guitarist Sigurd in 2007, and his own brush with death in 2011 after contracting typhoid fever during a South American tour in support of the Blood Magick Necromance album.
After a year-long struggle to get himself back in fighting shape, Helmuth and Belphegor were back at it – albeit it a bit less rigorously. In late 2012, the band slowly began working on what became their 10th album Conjuring The Dead with Hate Eternal mainman Erik Rutan at his Mana Recording Studios in Florida. The album, which finds Belphegor not losing one iota of their brutality or depravity, was issued in early August.
A few weeks prior to Conjuring’s release, in responses to e-mailed questions, Helmuth offered the following about Belphegor’s endurance, his own return from death’s door and the new album’s celebration of “Diabolical Death Metal.” The ALL CAPS and creative spellings are his own.
