Note: None of us here at Metal-Rules.com make any money from "working" for this site. That said, the below openings are not for paying positions, but require mature and reliable individuals who have some free time, a passion for heavy metal, and a desire to help with the forward advancement of Metal-Rules.com.

The site has been online since 1995 when it was started as a one man operation. Since then we have grown considerably with more staff writers and guest contributors from many countries around the world.

Staff Writing Positions

So you'd like to write for Metal-Rules.com? You see yourself with piles of free CD's, attending concerts for free, speaking with and even meeting some of your favorite metal icons. While this is all possible, we do not want to attract those that are all about the glory without the hard work required to obtain these perks. Getting free music means you have to properly review it in a timely fashion. Attending a concert for free means you'll be photographing the band and writing up a detailed review of the show. Meeting or speaking on the phone with metal's finest means you'll be recording and conducting an interview for our webzine.

Current writing positions available

Reviewer
Must be able to cover at least 5-10 releases a month from varying metal genres as assigned to you and from your own recent acquisitions.
Reviewer / Interviewer
Must be able to cover at least 5 releases a month from varying metal genres as assigned to you or from your own recent acquisitions. Available to conduct at least 2 interviews (phone / email) every month. Interviews will be a combination of assigned bands to interview and options to cover bands of your choosing that are doing press.
Interviewer
Available to conduct at least 4 interviews (phone AND email) every month. Interviews will be a combination of assigned bands to interview and options to cover bands of your choosing that are doing press.

Here are some of the requirements

You must have a good understanding of all the metal genres. This is essential for album reviewers. With a broad understanding of the genres and what has happened in the past decades you are in a position to give a proper opinion on the albums which you will be covering.
Professionalism: Your articles will be read by both fans, the bands, and the industry. If you are attending a concert to cover or interviewing a band, you are the face of Metal Rules at that event and as such must conduct yourself in a professional manner.
Willingness to work within our format. While your individual style can of course shine through, and we are open to criticism and improvement, for starters you will be expected to stick within our guidelines for review and article writing.
You must be fluent in English and have excellent spelling and grammar.
Please consider this as a long term commitment, not something to spend a summer vacation on but something you'd like to do for years. We've been here since 1995, and we're not planning on going away! Although this is a fan-driven site and no one here is a full time employee, we do not want someone who has very limited time available to help. While this is a hobby, it is still work and requires a certain level of commitment.
Some very simple graphic skills are required. By simple we mean the ability to resize existing graphics to the proper format and size required for our layouts.
Proficient with WYSIWYG styled editors (word, open office writer, whatever...). Our back end systems will be easy for you to use if you have a basic understanding of these kinds of tools.
All submitted material must be unique to our site. No submissions (text/pictures) will be posted elsewhere online or in print in whole or in part without the formal consent of the editor in chief of Metal-Rules.com.

As well please indicate your location, preferred metal styles, number of years you've been into metal, your age, and any other relevant experience you possess.

Minister of Marketing and Propaganda

Metal-Rules.com is looking for one reliable and outgoing individual to help with marketing/sales.

Responsibilities: Your main task will be to find, contact, and secure advertisers/sponsors for our site. Secondary tasks will include: compiling a weekly or monthly newsletter, writing & distributing press releases to media outlets, and any other marketing functions we require.

Experience/Requirements: While no real work experience is required, it would be very helpful if you have knowledge of online marketing and advertising along with experience writing sales "pitch" letters. It will make things easier if you have knowledge of the metal industry and contacts, etc. As for the time required to handle this position, that is up to you entirely, as long as you are successful. The main portion of your work will be done via e-mail, so you'll need to be able to send, check and reply to e-mails daily.

Transcriptionists

Metal-Rules.com is looking transcriptionists for interviews.

Responsibilities: Like the title suggests...transcribing spoken word to proper English :). Recorded interviews will be made available for you to download in MP3 format.

Experience/Requirements: While no experience is required, patience is!! Typing up a 30 to 45+ minute pre-recorded phone conversation is not a task for someone who does "hunt and pack" typing. You'll have to be able to type fast and do so with proper spelling, punctuation, etc. Often our interviews are done with people who have an accent, some stronger than others, so you will need to be comfortable with understanding English spoken with an accent.
