Steve DiGiorgio on the passing of Chuck Schuldiner
Added Monday, December 17
Here's what Steve DiGiorgio, band mate and bass player of Control
Denied, wrote about the passing of Chuck Schuldiner:
"Saddened...
This is the first time since I've heard the news that I've been on the
computer. I can see that news travels fast. Everyone knows by now. Also
I want to thank all of you for your kind words of caring and support. So
what do I have to add? We have lost an icon in the metal music world.
More importantly, I have lost a good friend of many many years. He was
born the same year as me and we had a lot in common. It's obvious that I
played my best around him, somehow he brought out the sickest bass lines
in me. He always pushed me to do more, think of more, pushing the
boundaries and find the most innovative things...but to still keep it
within the formula. I have lost an inspiration to my own personal
musical quest, I will miss him forever. We were in the middle of doing
the next record, and it's sad beyond belief that he never saw it to it's
completion. We will try our best to finish it in his honor, but will
never know if it lives up to his standards. That's the least we can do
for someone who gave so much and cared so much about what he did and how
it effected those who belived as well. Though I am glad in some small
way the the suffering is over for him...that he would not be able to
play his guitar again, reorganize his massive vinyl collection, work
around the house, go to the beach, go to concerts...the things he loved
to do. He didn't deserve a life without those things that made him who
he was. Because he was, what he loved. He very much loved his family,
never being too far away from his mother, father, his sister and his
nephew. He loved animals and his pets were his family too. He loved the
outdoors, barbeques, beaches, hikes, and canoeing took up a lot of time
when we weren't writing new tunes. Of course he loved music, he made it
his life...and we made it ours. It's true he had something very serious,
and possibly something that would ultimately take him. But I want you to
ignore all the rumors, all the hearsay, all the bullshit...and know that
he never accepted his fate. He never gave up trying to overcome it. He
went down swinging and was a true fighter until the end. He was told by
his first doctor he didn't have long to live, so he went to another.
When those doctors told him the same thing, he did it again - he went to
find the answer he wanted, not the answer he was given. He traveled all
over the country looking for someone to help in his fight. He wouldn't
take no for an answer. His will to live was strengthened by the resolve
of those around him. His family most of all who didn't hesitate to do
what was neccessary for him. His friends who tried to pitch in whatever
possible. And the fans and supporters all over the world, who's words
and contributions kept the spark alive when things seemed the darkest.
Be proud of his work, his heart still beats for us every time we listen
to his songs, because his heart is in his work. Goodbye for a while
Metal Brother, I'll miss you more than words can say.

A Sad Day For
Heavy Metal
As posted on: www.emptywords.org/NEWS.htm
Chuck Schuldiner: December 13, 2001
Today we have to give you the saddest news ever. Chuck lost the
fight for his life on December 13 2001 at 4 PM EST. We are all in
shock and despite any expectations we had, we can't believe that
this is really happening.
A farewell word has been posted on the memorial
page. Needless to say, we will continue with EmptyWords to
honor Chuck's memory, and the memory of the wonderful music he
shared with us all.
The sitekeepers, December 15 2001
I am shocked and it still is sinking in that Chuck is gone.
I've been a fan of his and of Death since the HUMAN album. Just this
month I bought and reviewed the two Death DVD's making me wish even
harder for a fast recovery....alas that didn't happen. Chuck, you
will be remembered by us true metalheads forever and your music will
also never be forgotten. Rest in peace brother.

Below is a collection of news
and happenings on this ongoing news item
Control Denied - Update From Steve DiGiorgio
Added Wednesday, October 3
According to Blabbermouth.net, Control Denied bassist Steve DiGiorgio
(Testament, ex-Death) has come forward with news that drum tracks for the
band's upcoming effort have been recorded.
As far as the rest of the album is concerned, DiGiorgio states that much of
the guitar tracks are finished. While Control Denied have a long way to go to
finish the album, substantial work has been completed on melody parts,
harmonies, solos and overdubs.
"Fortunately it's all written and ready to go, but Chuck has been
working on it little by little in-between treatments," said the
ever-talented bassist. "But lately he's been needing some stronger
treatments, so it's easy to see why the work on the album has been postponed
indefinitely. The health of my friend is for more important than the
production of the album. Believe me, [guitarist] Shannon [Hamm], [drummer]
Richard [Christy] and especially Chuck as well as myself want to see the
completion of this to the fullest. But I'm sure you can understand that
something of this magnitude takes all the importance and puts life into proper
perspective."
Although no reports exist, it is unknown if vocalist Tim Aymar will return
to the fold. As of December 2000, Aymar was still listed as a member of the
band, but DiGiorgio's omission of the vocalist in the quote above signals
Control Denied may enlist a different vocalist for its second album. (NOTE:
this is FALSE...Tim contacted Metal-Rules.com and said he would VERY MUCH be a
part of Control Denied).
Currently, Control Denied's second effort is scheduled to come out on
Hammerheart Records.
More Live Death On The Way!
Added Tuesday, September 4
According to Blabbermouth, Nuclear Blast will be releasing another live CD
from DEATH, Live In Eindhoven, on October 29th. The disc will only be
available through Nuclear Blast mail order. The album was recorded at the
group's Dynamo Festival appearance in O98. The CD will sell for $7, and $2.50
of each CD will go directly to the Chuck Schuldiner Medical Fund. There will
also be a DVD for $12 of the same show. Both the CD and DVD will only be
available in slip-sleeves (no jewel cases).
STATUS UPDATE-CHUCK SCHULDINER
August 30, 2001
Many of you will recall that when we started our fundraising efforts,
approximately 3 months ago, that Death/Control Denied founder, Chuck
Schuldiner, was brought to Los Angeles to take part in a trial for a still
experimental chemotherapy agent called Vincristine. Although the family was
assured that the drug is virtually non-toxic in nature, the large dosage which
Schuldiner received over the span of five days did indeed poison him causing residual
difficulties and weakness which he has been recovering from since. These
effects are all considered to be temporary and in fact Chuck is making
progress and gaining his strength back day by day. We're expecting Chuck is
now receiving follow-up treatments of a related but milder drug in an effort
to eradicate any further cancer cells that remain, although the outcome of
that treatment cannot be assessed at this time.
We would like to announce the second wave of eBay auctions
that will be posted on September 10th and can be accessed through www.hammerheartamerica.com.
Future items up for bidding include guitars donated by Andy LaRocque and
Novembers Doom, Drum sticks and a snare drum donated by Control Denied's
Richard Christy, autographed memorabilia from Ozzy Ozbourne, an autographed
cymbal from Bill Ward, the original Cannibal Corpse banner used at their live
shows (Barnes era) and much much more! Thanks go out to everyone that has
donated items and helped us to keep this effort going. We have raised about
$7,500 so far and although that may not put a HUGE dent in The Schuldiner's
financial burden, it HAS helped and it HAS made many things possible for Chuck
during his recovery. On behalf of the Schuldiner family, we sincerely thank
you.
Recent benefit shows in Orlando and Milwaukee have contributed
to the medical fund as well as the sold-out Thrash of The Titans benefit in
San Francisco, CA. To everyone that has shown their true metal spirit, once
again we thank you!! Please support the upcoming benefits in NJ, Cleveland,
Orlando, Holland, Austria and Portugal. More info can be found on the
Hammerheart America website as well.
Previously unreleased Death demo material will be released by
Hammerheart Records, worldwide, in an effort to raise additional funds. After
costs, proceeds will be donated into Chuck's account. The release, although
still not scheduled, will be called ZERO TOLERANCE.
We recieved the following information on Saturday, June 23rd from
Iside Occella form the website www.controldenied.com
We are collecting support messages for Chuck (with the permission
of the Schuldiner Family), and they will be given personally to him with
a special guest-book.
All messages should be sent ASAP:

NUCLEAR BLAST AIDS CHUCK IN
TIME OF NEED
Added Friday, June 15
Recognizing the need of someone who has been a friend, mentor
and idol to so many, Nuclear Blast has donated the sum of $10,000 to Chuck and
his family in their time of need. As has been well documented recently, Chuck
Schuldiner -- who some would call the single most influential man in
underground metal -- once again had to seek medical treatment for a brain
tumor, which he was diagnosed with over two years ago. In addition, The
Century Family, Inc., of which Nuclear Blast is a part along with Century
Media Records, Noise Records, Inside Out America and Olympic, has donated
several items for the online auction organized by Hammerheart America and
hosted by ebay and Allbeat.com. These items come from the respective labels'
archives as well as from the personal collections of employees.
While these donations help ease
the financial burden felt by the Schuldiner family, they will by no means
cover the cost of Chuck's continuing treatments. Nuclear Blast would like to
join our friends at Hammerheart America in encouraging everyone to send a
donation to the Schuldiners. Information on the "Charles Schuldiner
Medical Fund" is as follows:

Chuck Billy Update
Added Friday, June 15
The following update on TESTAMENT vocalist Chuck Billy's
condition was posted on the group's official web site: "Chuck Billy says
'Hello!' and wanted me to let you know he is doing well and adapting to the
treatment for cancer. Though he's lost some of his hair, he has yet to feel the
most common side-effects of the chemo (HE'S TOUGH!). Chuck said that all your
prayers and well wishes have helped considerably, and he believes it had a lot
to do with the good prognosis. ... "Also, Chuck wants everyone to know how
touched he and his family are by the kindness and generosity of some of the
greatest musicians coming together for a good cause. 'Thrash Of The Titans' will
surely be a once in a lifetime event, so DON'T MISS IT! Besides being a 'metalhead's
dream', this benefit is to raise people's awareness of this terrible disease. As
you've heard, a portion of the proceeds will go to help another brother, Chuck
Schuldiner. United we can fight this disease!"
ONLINE AUCTION SET TO BENEFIT DEATH/CONTROL
DENIED FRONTMAN'S CANCER TREATMENT
Added Friday, June 1
PITTSBURGH, Penn. - An online auction is currently being held to raise money
for Chuck Schuldiner, founder and leader of the seminal Florida death metal
band Death, who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor two years ago.
Schuldiner, 33, was diagnosed on his 31st
birthday after experiencing headaches and unusual symptoms while in the studio
working on an album for his current full-time band, Control Denied. With the
generous help of family, friends, and organizations such as MusiCares,
Schuldiner was able to moderately control the cancer with various treatments
and previous operations. In recent weeks, Schuldiner's condition has worsened.
Both live and necrotic cancer tissue has built up in his brain and has started
to infiltrate the cerebellum, causing Schuldiner's health to decline rapidly.
Schuldiner is presently at Cedar Sinai
Comprehensive Care Center awaiting word from doctors to begin a fairly new and
still relatively experimental drug called Vincristine (VCR). Vincristine
belongs to a class of naturally occurring chemotherapy agents, which are
extracted from the periwinkle plant and, unlike many chemotherapy drugs, bears
practically no toxic side effects. Should this course of action be approved,
treatment will begin immediately. At this time Schuldiner's surgical team in
New York City feels that surgery is not an option.
Schuldiner is rightfully considered the
forefather of the death metal genre and a major innovator within heavy metal
overall. Death formed in 1983 when Schuldiner was a teenager and has released
seven albums worldwide. The band's early albums, including "Scream Bloody
Gore" and "Leprosy," are cited by many as being the most
influential albums in death metal. Schuldiner's later work took on a more
technical approach, cementing Death's status not only as one of the most
brutal, but also as one of the most technically proficient bands in metal
history. After retiring Death in 1999, Schuldiner began concentrating 100
percent of his creativity on Control Denied, which he feels strongly is an
extension, or natural maturation, of what Death has been for over a decade. He
had, in fact, been working on the new Control Denied album, "When Machine
and Man Collide," when he was taken aback by this illness once again.
In addition to the benefit auction, upon
hearing about Schuldiner's situation from bassist Steve DiGiorgio (whose
resume includes Death, Control Denied and Testament), Testament vocalist Chuck
Billy, who has also recently been diagnosed with cancer, volunteered to share
the proceeds of a planned mid-August benefit concert in his honor with
Schuldiner.
"Obviously, this act of selfless
consideration has touched us immensely," said Schuldiner's mother, Jane.
"Words really can't express the gratitude we feel toward Chuck Billy and
his family for doing such an amazing thing for someone else in need when he,
himself, is going through such a hard time, as well. He must be an amazing
young man."
The online auction features an assortment of
rare music memorabilia kindly donated by the music and metal communities, and
also includes one of Schuldiner's own guitars and a bass autographed by Steve
DiGiorgio, as well as rare items from rock 'n' roll's more mainstream artists
such as Godsmack, Staind, Disturbed, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The
auction, hosted through eBay and allbeat.com, may be accessed through
Hammerheart America's website (www.hammerheartamerica.com)
by following links to the Charles Schuldiner Medical Fund Benefit. Donations
to the fund are also accepted and may be wired, transmitted via PayPal, or
mailed in care of Hammerheart Records. All funds will go to the Charles
Schuldiner Medical Fund, and donations are tax deductible.

News Update From Steve DiGorgio
Added Thursday, May 25
Chuck Billy came by for dinner tonight
and said he read about Chuck Shuldiners current condition. He thought that
sucked beyond belief. And out of the kindness out of his massive heart, he
told me to get a hold of Chuck S family and the record company, HammerHeart
USA, to let them know that he will be sharing the fiancial benefits he will
gain from the Thrash Of The Titans charity/benefit show later this summer held
in his honor. If that ain't a showing of unity and caring amongst our metal
community...I don't know what is. One guy suffering from an evil disease
sharing his fortune from everyone pitching in and then helping out a fellow
metal dude suffering even worse from the similar evilness.
I'm, sorry...I just had to share this with
anyone willing to read. It's fucking times like this for all negativity and
shit talking to fuck off. We're talking about people's lives here, no gossip,
no rumors. Real shit...people helping each other to survive. This should be
the top of the news everyday. Not some crap about who fucked who out of money
or commitments. Or who's doing shit talking to make the other guy look bad. Or
some garbage about who's cool or who's a dick. Everyone should re-evaluate
their own take on life, and wonder how much all this shit talking takes away
from something you can do to help someone who needs it.
ON BEHALF OF CHUCK SCHULDINER
Added Thursday, May 24
Two years ago this month, on his 31st birthday, Chuck Schuldiner, founder of
Death & Control Denied and forefather to an entire movement in Heavy
Metal, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. For the past two years,
Chuck has fought for his life, family and passion for music. Fans worldwide
voiced their concern and support and when possible tried to send donations to
the Schuldiner’s medical fund to assist in the payment of Chuck’s care.
Hammerheart and the entire Schuldiner family are greatly appreciative for the
continued generosity and enthusiasm, however at this time have additional news
to share with the musical community.
At this very moment it is necessary for Chuck
to have a very specific and immediate surgical treatment which is being denied
to him based on a lack of funds. Chuck needs immediate surgery; in fact he is
at home in Florida awaiting the opportunity for a very delicate operation that
his doctors adamantly insist is crucial for his recovery. After having
exhausted every possible avenue, Chuck’s family and friends are reaching out
to ask for your assistance.
Did you know that unless you already have one
foot inside death’s door that many US government assistance programs are not
available to you? Did you know that in certain states a pre-existing medical
condition can keep you from obtaining any medical insurance whatsoever,
leaving all medical expenses in the lap of the sick and their families? Do you
know how many people die of cancer every year because there is not enough help
or awareness provided to them?
Chuck Schuldiner is no faceless stranger to any
us. He has inspired more bands than anyone could ever count. He has afforded a
lot of us with the opportunity to do what we love for a living. He has changed
the face of metal and effected so many lives forever…. Chuck Schuldiner is
one of our own and we need to help him now, more than ever.
In order to make this treatment possible,
Hammerheart America, in conjunction with labels, magazines, radio stations and
bands worldwide, is organizing an online auction of rare collectibles,
autographed musical keepsakes and custom-made instruments, straight out of the
artist’s hands, amongst them one of Chuck’s very own guitars and a Steve
DiGiorgio custom bass. Every penny raised goes into the medical fund set up by
Chuck’s family. In addition, anything donated as a gift to this fund is tax
deductible. Anyone able to spare even a few dollars would be helping us
conquer a very serious obstacle.
Artists willing to donate something to this
auction can email auction@hammerheartamerica.com
or call the office directly at (412) 390-4088. Information on the auction can
be found on the Hammerheart America webpage at http://www.hammerheartamerica.com/makeadifference.html

we all pull together we CAN make a difference for not just one life but for

Thrash Of The Titans
Added Saturday, May 19
As you all know, Chuck Billy was recently diagnosed with cancer. This came as
a major shock to the metal community...needless to say. Chuck is currently
undergoing treatment and is keeping a positive attitude. Fortunately, the
doctors say that Chuck's type of cancer is treatable. It will be a tough
battle but Chuck is one strong M.F. and nothing like this is going to stop
him! Walter Morgan, Chuck's long time friend, is attempting to put together
the greatest old school thrash concert in metal history as a tribute and
benefit to Chuck. The response has been overwhelming. Bands long extinct have
agreed to reunite for this event despite differences amongst
themselves.....all to help Chuck! In fact the whole metal community is
chipping in to help Chuck and make this event something very special for both
the Billy family and metal fans alike. This is a dream line up for many thrash
fans. Things are still in the air as far as a final band line up and a
venue/date. Bands being approached include: Slayer, Death Angel and a few
other legendary bands that we hope will be able to participate. www.go.to/skitzo
We have asked Billy Milano of the Legendary Stormtroopers Of
Death to act as Master of Ceremonies. According to Debbie Abono, (who is
helping with this event along with Joey Huston) Billy states he will be happy
to take part as long as it works out with his schedule. In fact everyone has
been more than happy to take part in this. Nobody has refused yet. Who said
Metal Heads were evil dirtbags?
Please spread the word and lets make this an
event that's not only for a very good cause but one that will strengthen the
metal scene, keep old school true metal alive and make metal history. Please
visit: http://www.testamentlegions.com/
and leave your get well wishes to Chuck.
An official Thrash Of The Titans web site is in
development and something should be up by the 1st week in June. For those of
you unable to make it to the Bay Area for this event but still wish to help
out Chuck, we will have a feature called Pay Pal (used by Ebayers), which will
allow you to send Chuck donations via email. Every little bit counts. Even if
it's only a few dollars). Last but not least, check out http://www.talesfromthepit.com
for the latest updates on this event and other
metal stuff. Click on Hellroom Newsboard.
