What do you get when you combine the best elements of Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Dio, and Iron Maiden? Yes, a great sounding band. And what band can pull this off? Well, new comers Glanville of course. Who else?

Just recently formed in Germany, Rene Hoffman and Phillip Michel have actually been friends for many years, playing together as teenagers while trying to find themselves, had drifted apart. Not as friends mind you, but professionally. Hoffman started a career as a producer while Michel became a touring guitarist and songwriter.

Fast forward 13 years and luckily for us metal fans, Glanville is born. And yes, thinking about the first line in the review, Glanville’s sound does come off as a bit 80’s metal. All good though. Their sound may be a bit retro, but as retro as it may be, the originality is not lost on this EP.

Musically, the listener is catapulted back to a time where a band was a band with their own sound. That was a time when you could actually tell bands apart from one another. A feet that has become increasingly more and more difficult over the years.

Ripping guitar solos are no longer a thing of the past here as this EP is filled with plenty of them. And Hoffman’s vocal delivery is pitch perfect. His voice is his own and is one that the metal community will be hearing for a long time.

From high-fuel heavy metal fury to a more down tuned rock vibe, Glanville’s FIRST BLOOD is sure to please even the pickiest of heavy metal fans. Not only does their music take you back to a time when metal was at its glory, it also proves that there is still great original metal to be made by great new metal bands.

Glanville is the band to watch out for in the future. I know they are now on my radar and I will be anxiously awaiting future releases and hopefully a U.S. tour. Yes, they are that good!
