Most of the time at Metal-Rules.com we review new, full-length studio albums but sometimes I stray off the beaten path. As some of our regular readers may know I refer to certain types of reviews I write as ‘public service reviews’. These are shorter reviews with much less analysis or in-depth commentary.   I occasionally do these types of reviews often for stuff like, EP’s, reissues, Live albums, covers albums, the occasional ’Greatest Hits’ or compilation album, you know… the odds ‘n’ sods. These are the releases outside the conventions of a new, full-length studio album that I still want to draw attention to, maybe for nostalgia, maybe because I like the band, who knows?   In this case, this month I’m taking a look at the band Ilium.

Ilium, the very cool, Progressive Power Metal band from Australia has recently re-recorded their 2003 debut album, SIRENS OF THE STYX. In celebration of the 15th anniversary of the recording of the debut, which was released by Steelheart Records, the band have completely re-recorded the album and called it, SIRENS OF THE STYX-RESTYXED.

At this point founders, Jason and Steve remain and they have recruited Ty on drums and none other than the return of Lord Tim on vocals. That adds some serious vocal firepower!   If you are a fan of Ilium, there are three good reasons to grab this now. One, the album is re-arranged and re-recorded. The production is beefier and more modern. Two, they have included the original debut as a bonus disc so you can compare the versions. The songs are longer, some are shorter and for true fans you can fun picking out the changes. Lastly, they are just a kick-ass band that deserve some more ears. Just to sweeten the package, it comes with nice new cover at as well.

I’d rate this a little higher, solely based on music alone, but since it is ‘just’ a re-recording you can slide the scale to your preference, but I’d still recommend giving this a spin!
