It was another banner year for the American record label, Stormspell Records so I’ve decided to do a round-up of what this respected True Metal label was up to in 2017. I’m reviewing the following ten bands in this feature.
Feel free to check out all the reviews. If you are like me, if you like one of these albums on this consistent and focused theme label you’ll probably like ‘em all!
Yuri is a Brazilian solo artist who has been slowly and methodically building a name for himself. He started out in 2010 and released a handful of EP’s. Stormspell picked him up and released a collection of the EP’s with the magnificent title of IN THE STEEL WE TRUST. Now, a year later he has released his debut full-length album called YOUR KINGDOM WILL FALL.
Yuri’s fascination of medieval times comes through nicely on this album of classic Metal. Sonically, it is a bit reminiscent of what Jack Starr has been doing lately and that is a compliment. As the sole composer and instrumentalist he has a very clear vision and this sounds like a full band, unlike some solo projects which lack quality control.
Yuri main role is a keyboardist and the keyboards certainly play a prominent role but not overwhelmingly so, like for example a Janne Warmen solo album. Yuri uses them effectively in conjunction with everything else for a full robust sound. The songs are epic, uplifting anthems with big sing-along choruses. There are some nice hints of folk styling on cuts like ‘Folkloric Song From The People’ and the gorgeous ballad, ‘She Walks Through The Flower Fields’ with a beautiful guest female vocal. Elsewhere the pounding anthems lean into Manowar territory which is always a good thing!
For you collectors there is a pressing available through Marquee Records with alternate cover art as well. A very fine and promising debut album!
