Lacuna Coil (4.5/5)
Just one month after a successful European tour to promote their latest album “Delirium”, Lacuna Coil performed one of the most significant concerts of their long career on Friday 19th of January 2018.
Indeed, they had the great idea to do a very special one-off show in London at the O2 Forum Kentish Town for the band’s 20th anniversary.
That exclusive gig, entitled “Nothing Stands In Our Way – 119 Show” was recorded and filmed for a Live DVD release later this year. It gathered fans from all over Europe, South America and even Australia.
The venue was well packed and I’m pretty sure all tickets sold out. This is something I fully expected because the majority of fans want to attend an event that will be immortalized in a Live DVD so they could proudly say later: “I was there!”
However, what surprised me was the fact they decided to record and film this exceptional concert in the UK and not in their homeland, Italy. Normally, most of bands organize such events in their respective country, which wasn’t the case here.
Anyway, I still think they did the right choice, especially for the UK fans! The O2 Forum Kentish Town is one of London’s best venues and the sound was just perfect. No technical issues at all.
Obviously, there was no support band for the event, which allowed the band to offer an extended set spanning most of their discography. The Italians performed 25 tracks in total, including old classics and songs they had never played before!
This was definitely another good reason to be there. Almost 2 hours and a half of pure happiness. Lacuna Coil delivered a fantastic show that conquered the whole crowd.
It was the first time I’ve seen them live and I wish I had seen them more often.
As expected, Cristina Scabbia’s performance was flawless. She’s undoubtedly one of the most charismatic and talented female metal vocalists of the last 20 years.
Of course, she’s the main reason why the band achieved commercial and critical success worldwide. Her warm, sensual voice has always been Lacuna Coil’s trademark.
Andrea Ferro’s vocals were in perfect symbiosis with Cristina’s ones, making their duet very efficient. He also alternates growls and clean vocals very well.
The other members (Marco Coti Zelati, Ryan Folden, Diego Cavallotti) looked a bit like their compatriots of Death SS on stage, with similar make-up.
I was blown away by their musical performance but also by the show’s theatrical dimension. There was a kind of circus tent on stage and I really appreciated the burlesque-ish atmosphere.
Indeed, we could see some dancers and gymnasts with a slight burlesque style, joining the band on stage throughout several songs. That theatrical style fit very well with Lacuna Coil’s music.
They brilliantly performed a very interesting and various set. We got some old classics such as “Swamped” (my favourite Lacuna Coil song), “Heaven’s a Lie”, “Comalies”, “Our Truth”, “Closer” and some songs they had never played before (including “Soul Into Hades” from their 1998 eponymous EP).
Moreover, we got some recent tracks and they had the excellent idea to offer the piano version of “Falling” and “Wide Awake”.
I loved those ballads and it was impressive to see Cristina Scabbia getting suspended in the air slowly by ropes while singing.
At the end of the set, they played their well-known cover of Depeche Mode’s hit record “Enjoy the Silence”. In my opinion, this is truly a very good cover since they did a gothic metal version of the song.
To close the concert in apotheosis, they logically performed “Nothing Stands in Our Way” with all dancers and gymnasts. Unfortunately, we didn’t hear “Spellbound” which is one of their catchiest songs but I’m well aware they had to make a selection for that special set and it’s always a tough exercise.
Rather than using pre-recorded synths, I would have preferred they welcomed a real keyboardist for such event but I understand it would have been an additional cost for them.
Huge thanks to Lacuna Coil for that unforgettable night. I can’t wait to see this great show again on DVD next year!
