Back in March of 2103 I reviewed Vandroya’s debut album ONE and I was pretty impressed. Naturally I was quite pleased to see they have released their second full-length studio album called BEYOND THE HUMAN MIND. Thank goodness they didn’t decide to call it TWO.
Things seem status quo in Brazilian Power Metal band camp as they are still signed to Inner Wound Records and have had no line-up changes at all. Top it off with another fine piece of Felipe Franco artwork and excellent production values courtesy of guitarist Marco Lambert, everything is in place for another winning effort by Vandroya.
BEYOND THE HUMAN MIND is much like the debut record, fast, clean, melodic Power Metal; if anything this album is a bit heavier and faster. The double-kick drums on any number of songs are pretty relentless, providing a welcome pace. The strong, clear, powerful voice of Daisa Munhoz leads the charge. I like her style, it is not too operatic but still very classical. Following a lengthy introduction the album rips through three fast songs before an abrupt change where we are treated to an excellent ballad called ‘Last Breath’. It has a huge 80’s power ballad feel complete with acoustic guitar mixed quite high and upfront with a big catchy chorus. This song would fit nicely on any number of Bon Jovi or White Lion albums. I thin kit is a great song, but it almost seems out of place on the album. However it is well sequenced to give the listener a rest at the halfway point of the album. The next cut, ‘I’m Alive’ brings the pace back up loaded with great solos, good melodies and the aforementioned double-kick action. Then some acoustic piano takes us into another superb ballad before the album ends with an epic piece, the title track at almost 11 minutes long with many moods and twists and turns.
BEYOND THE HUMAN MIND is as good or even a bit better than the debut and it a very welcome entry into their catalogue. Only two albums into their career, I feel Vandroya is becoming one of the better Brazilian Power Metal bands, and trust me, there are many of them!
