Rhapsody of Fire’s first DVD roughly focusing on the Dark Secret and Triumph Or Agony tour and era 2005-2007.
Since Rhapsody recently announced a bit of a reunion tour, I felt it was a good a time as any to go back 10 years to review the bands DVD, VISIONS FROM THE ENCHANTED LANDS.
Metal is a business and sometimes business is not so good. Rhapsody has had their share of trouble, with being forced to change their name and switching labels, then having a falling out with the new label. After years on Limb Records, Rhapsody, (now Rhapsody Of Fire) switched to Manowar’s label, Magic Circle. Before they had a falling out, Magic Circle issued the bands first and only (to date) DVD. The business aspect is that the DVD features nothing from the first decade of the band, it is strictly a product of the bands brief stay on the Magic Circle label. The definitive Rhapsody DVD has yet to be made. That’s OK, and as we all know Magic Circle is synonymous with high quality and this DVD is very well done. The two disc set comes housed in a slip case and has a 12 page, full colour booklet as well. The sound and visual quality is top notch as well.
DVD I primary focus is a documentary covering the past several years of the band, focusing primarily on the bands first North American tour with Manowar in support of the TRIUMPH OR AGONY album. There are live clips, interviews, fan segments, and more. There are also two videos and two bonus audio tracks as well. The packaging says it includes all videos, but it doesn’t, as the Limb era videos are not included. There are also a couple of audio only bonus tracks, including a really killer version of the Manowar song, ‘Power Of Thy Sword’, which they really make their own. A cool feature is the extended video of ‘Unholy Warcry’, which runs 10 minutes and features the epic narration of Sir Christopher Lee.
DVD II is a bit more of mish-mash…again a couple of videos, two making of video segments, more live clips, outtakes and so on. It seems very scattered and unorganized to me. The Centerpiece is a documentary of the making of ‘SYMPHONY OF ENCHANTED LANDS-Part II-THE DARK SECRET’ that runs about 22 minutes. It’s pretty impressive to see the work that goes into making these types of massive projects, over 150 people were involved in the creation of the album! Pretty much everything that you saw on Disc I is detailed even more on Disc II. There is a 10 minute long EPK (Electronic Press Kit) basically an extended commercial, for the (at the time) forthcoming album TRIUMPH OR AGONY. There are many extended interviews, behind the scenes stuff, more ‘making of’ segments, it is all here for the true fan.
I don’t think you will get a more in-depth look at that era of Rhapsody. My only regret is that so much was left out in terms of the first decade of the band. The definitive Rhapsody DVD has yet to be made. Until that time, because as of time of writing this is the ONLY Rhapsody DVD, we will have to settle for this comprehensive look into the world of one of Power Metal mightiest bands.
