An OK collection of live clips, videos, interviews and photos from the Nuclear Blast era of 1997-2001.

It seems odd that for such a visual band, Dimmu Borgir doesn’t not have more home videos on the market. WORLD MISANTHROPY is the bands first DVD, excluding that VHS-only split with Dissection from back in 1997. It’s been six years since the poorly received ABRAHADABRA so for no reason in particular I thought I’d give this decent band some attention by looking at their DVD from arguably the height of their power.

WORLD MISANTHROPY falls easily into the ‘tour diary’ style DVD. The nice two-disc set comes with a cool cover art, a plain booklet with no pictures, just the credits. I must admit the tour diary is likely my least favourite type of DVD. I’d rather see a whole concert rather than just clips of songs. I’d rather have a documentary than just random interviews. Unfortunately perhaps this DVD is a bit of a jumbled mess. Disc one consists of live clips inter spliced with interviews of each band member, inter spliced with tons of backstage fooling around. The camera is always on and there is no shortage of drunks fooling around and having the time of their life. I get it, but it is like watching someone else party you are not invited to and you don’t know the people. The stunts and jokes are amusing but how many times do we need to see the band and crew hanging around trashing a hotel room or getting drunk on the bus. The live stuff from various shows is cool, good effects, good visuals and good live sound. Some of the bootleg footage is pretty poor but gives us a feel of what it was like to be there. There does not seem to be much rhyme or reason to the clips or organization at all.

Disc Two has more live clips from Poland and North America. The highlight for me perhaps is the collection of four videos. There are also a generous number of bonus features, photo galleries, studio sessions and so on. WORLD MISANTHROPY has a good chunk of what a fan would want. I just wish it was a little more organized and do I say…serious? It’s well done but I don’t know how often I would need to go back and watch it.
