Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards 2016
@ Hammersmith Apollo, London
13th June, 2016
Review and photography by Sabrina Selkis
With hardly any time to recover fully from Download Festival in the Midlands of England, it is already time to go to the 14th annual Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards. Also it is the birthday celebration of 30 years of Metal Hammer Magazine, and what a ride it has been!
For the first time, it is happening at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, West London. Doors opens at 7 pm, and the queue outside is quite impressive already. Also, I have heard some people started queuing from 2pm. The tickets for the event were sold at the evil price of £6,66 with all proceeds going to charity.
After securing a drink and a good spot to take some photos, we are funnily (I think) threatened from the presenter to be fisted if we break any recording equipment in the photo pit by crowdsurfing. We have been warned!
2015/16 have been bad years, we have lost talented musicians, and tonight a proper tribute is offered to the Godfather of all, “Lemmy” Ian Fraser Kilmister with a 30 minute video with footage of interviews and live performances by Motorhead.
After this we are asked if we are ready for some ‘Viking shit’. Here we go, Amon Amarth on stage. They play a powerful 20 minutes set, with the two dragon heads on each side delivering some serious smoke, to the point you can’t even see the band members! Also fire balls are being used and thrown in the air. All of a sudden the room is very hot!
A first break happens, time to refresh ourselves and for the crew to set up the stage for the next band.
But before Halestrom plays, it is time for some “…and the winner is…” stuff!
Tonight’s awards host is Jamey Jasta from Hatebreed.
Best New Band – Creeper (with guest presenter Alex Milas)

Halestorm then takes the stage. The American band is fronted by singer/guitarist Lizzy Hale- what a strong woman, her vocals are insanely powerful! Later on she goes on to pick up the Dimebag Darrell ‘Shredder’ award, well deserved.
Then it is time for the French extraordinaires Gojira!

Dimebag Darrell ‘Shredder’ – Lzzy Hale (with guest presenters of Dragonforce)
Icon – Nikki Sixx (who forgets to take his award!)

Best Video- Parkway Drive
Golden God- Joey Jordison
The last award of the night ‘Golden God’ is for Joey Jordison. After thanking Slipknot, he becomes quite emotional and he reveals what happened exactly when he left the band:
“Towards the end of my career in Slipknot, I got really really sick with a horrible disease called transverse myelitis, I lost my legs. I couldn’t play anymore. It was a form of multiple sclerosis, which I wouldn’t wish on my worse enemy.”
Now time for Saxon to pay their own tribute to Lemmy and perform a one off live set with Campbell and Dee. Time to put the camera down as we headbang to this amazing moment!
As always this was a great awards show with some monumental performances and rather touching moments! Until next year…
