Staff Selections

1. Slayer – Live Undead

“Laughing as you eternally rot, Searching for human flesh and life’s blood.”

From the excellent SOUTH OF HEAVEN album comes one of my fav Slayer songs, Live Undead.

Slayer - Live Undead
Slayer – Live Undead

2. Iced Earth – Among The Living Dead
3. Gamma Ray – Empire of the Undead

4. Death – Zombie Ritual
5. Bloodbound – We Raise The Dead

Waspman

1. Deceased – Fearless Undead Machines

Deceased’s FEARLESS UNDEAD MACHINES is probably THE heavy metal magnum opus about zombies. I play it every year at Halloween, and still love it every time. The title track is both crushing and epic, perfectly encapsulating the album and making zombies as frightening as possible.

2. Death – Zombie Ritual
THE death metal zombie song.

3. Slayer – Live Undead
4. Anthrax – Fight ‘Em ‘Till You Can’t
5. Gamma Ray – Empire of the Undead

1) HAMMERFALL-Patient Zero (from Infected)

The newer, leaner, darker Hammerfall didn’t go over as well with many fans but I loved the heavier, scarier, darker, sound and zombie related cover art. A classic zombie tale about where it all goes to hell.

2.) DEATH-Evil Dead (From Scream Bloody Gore)

Perhaps loosely based on the classic Bruce Campbell splatter-film of the same name, this song (or Zombie ritual) will likely make many people lists as definitive zombie songs.

3.) MORTICIAN-Zombie Apocalypse (From Zombie Apocalypse)

An homage to the original zombie movie, minimal lyrics, brutal as hell.

4.) DECEASED-Fearless Undead Machines (from Fearless Undead Machines)

I bought this on my honeymoon in San Diego! My wife didn’t ‘get’ it but I love Deceased and their take on zombies in superb.

5.) MORTUARY DRAPE-Zombie (from Into The Drape EP)

I discovered this band fairly early into my introduction into Black Metal and this creepy graveyard tale has always held a special place in my dark heart.

1) Death – Zombie Ritual (SCREAM BLOODY GORE, 1987)

Before Chuck was singing about the cosmos and Tony Robbins type stuff, he was churning out horrific gems like this. Beyond being a total rager, the song provides some gory detail about what those undead fellows are celebrating on the album cover. The kids still go nuts for this song at DTA shows.

2) Cannibal Corpse – Kill or Become (A SKELETAL DOMAIN, 2014)

This song is a like an episode of The Walking Dead set to a soundtrack of face smashing death metal. Corpse quickly sets the scenario that the dead are alive and things aren’t great. Survivors are left with one choice to avoid becoming a ghoul themselves – “if you want to live/you have to kill or become/there’s no other way/you have to kill or become”.

3) Venom – Buried Alive/Raise the Dead (BLACK METAL, 1982)

Technically two songs, but I think the purists will understand. Only Venom could relate the horrors of becoming a zombie with the power of the Devil AND make it not sound totally ridiculous. The terror that Cronos recounts as he’s trapped in the casket, slowly being buried beneath the earth is equally matched with the hell he’s gonna raise once “Baphomet’s Call” frees him from captivity as a bloodthirsty and vengeful zombie.

4) Terrorizer – Dead Shall Rise (WORLD DOWNFALL, 1989)

Maybe the first socio-political grindcore zombie song? The scientists were messing with things they should’t have, and whoops! – zombie apocalypse.

5) Deceased – Fearless Undead Machines (FEARLESS UNDEAD MACHINES, 1997)

King Fowley is always good for spinning some epic yarns about all things horror, but this title track from their 3rd album is really a compelling narrative. It’s a pretty lyrically involved tune that keeps all of the terror and retro thrash you’d expect from Deceased, while challenging you with some metaphors of military intervention and social exploitation.

Erich

7. Bloodbound – We Raise The Dead
8. Venom – Raise The Dead

Anders Sandvall

1. Rob Zombie “Living Dead Girl”
It isn’t a list without the real Mr.Zombie!!

2. Slayer “Live Undead”
Slayer is Slayer and what can go wrong?

3. White Zombie “I, Zombie”
Rob Zombies old band definitely deserves a spot on this weeks list.

4. Overkill “Raise The Dead”
The old thrash legends delivers a solid song and fits perfect on the list with Raise The Dead.

5. King Diamond “Living Dead”
There isn’t a Helloween list without the undisputed Danish king of horror.

Honourable mentions:

  • Venom “Raise The Dead” – the old Black metal heroes are maybe nothing to brag about today but they are legends.
  • Anthrax “Fight ‘Em ‘Till You Can’t” – my childhood heroes stand strong with this pick.
