I loved their 10″ DEVIL MAN and pre-ordered this full length earlier this Summer. Initially I described them as the Heavy Metal Janis Joplin and not much has changed with that description. This full length lets the band really shine and show who they are.
The opening track and first single; “High Class Woman” is an all out assault. It’s heavy, fast and showcases the band’s talent. This song is also a solid representation of what to expect from the majority of the album. A song such as “River” shows a mellower and bluesier side to the band while still maintaining a heavy aspect. It’s not out of place and goes with the flow of the album. The cover of Chubby Checker’s “Gypsy” is quite a surprise. They add their own flair to this song while keeping the majority of the original melody intact. A very cool cover that you’d be hard pressed to know it’s a cover. Ending of the album is “Little Sun” which reminds me a little of Hendrix’s “Little Wing” with is mellowness and flowing sounds. A nice way to end out an excellent debut.
Blues Pills are not to be dismissed as some retro band or Stoner Metal. They play some killer music that is to be enjoyed by all. Yes they do have a heavy 70’s influence but they keep it fresh and modern and do not sound dated in any way, shape or form. The Joplin influence is heard in Elin’s voice but executed better than Janis ever did. One of the best debut album’s of 2014.
